It's and we're highlighting one of Nottingham's most famous artists - Dame Laura Knight! π¨
'Elsie on Hassan' was painted by Knight between 1929 and 1930. Knight had a life-long interest in travelling communities and performers, and featured many people from these communities in her work.
πͺ She visited Carmo's Circus in 1929, capturing real characters behind the scenes. She learned to paint fast and often in chaotic circumstances - while being made, this painting was investigated by and elephant and knocked over by an acrobat!

in 1377, King Edward III died.
π Famed for his long and successful reign, Edward III has a lasting legacy at Nottingham Castle, and we tell his story every day on our Cave Tour through Mortimer's Hole!
Almost 700 years ago, the young king changed the course of English history when he overthrew Queen Isabella and Roger Mortimer at Nottingham Castle, taking his rightful place on the throne in 1330. Walk the caves Edward and his men travelled through, and hear his story...

Happy from Nottingham Castle! π³οΈβππ³οΈββ§οΈπ
We're so proud to be hosting this wonderful exhibition, curated by author and broadcaster Damian Barr, highlighting visionary Scottish artists Robert MacBryde & Robert Colquhoun.
First launching at the Charleston in Lewes, this is the first major exhibition in England celebrating the lives and works of the artists since 1962, and includes some never before seen works! Homosexuality was only partially decriminalised in England in 1967, and in Scotland in 1981 - this show is a rare celebration of their relationship, discussing their identities freely, and bringing to light their extraordinary lives together over nearly 30 years.
π‘ Complimenting the exhibition is Robert Montgomery's visual light poetry installation: 'The People You Love Become Ghosts Inside Of You."
Be inspired by their practice, their craft, and their bravery at 'Artists, Lovers, Outsiders', on display at Nottingham Castle until 6th September
