Smarty Paws - Dog Grooming

An update on yesterdays heatstroke dog.

Well firstly he’s alive! Thank goodness. Let me tell you the whole process of heat and our dogs…

When dogs overheat they use a lot of glucose in the act of cooling themselves and therefore need sugar! We actively cool them and stop at 39.5c to avoid hypothermia. But even with this the gut takes a massive hit.

For this dog bacteria leaked from the gut into the blood stream. The result was sepsis that kicked in around 90 minutes of returning to a more normal temperature.

The fight is firstly to control the body temperature and stop the brain from literally frying. Then it’s a fight to control sepsis in these severe cases.

Well after a lot of work from multiple vets and nurses he is looking like he’ll live to tell the tale. Such an unlucky dog to be put in that situation in the first place, but such a lucky one to have survived it.

🐾☀️ EXTREME WEATHER ALERT ☀️🐾

As we anticipate extremely high temperatures next week, we kindly request that you refrain from exercising your dogs before their grooming appointments. Any dogs that are walked to the salon or those already exhibiting signs of heat exhaustion will unfortunately be turned away.

The salon is equipped with air conditioning and water is always available. However, if we determine that the salon is becoming too warm for the dogs' comfort and safety, we may need to reschedule appointments.

Thank you for your understanding during this extreme weather period. If you believe your dog may struggle in the heat, please reach out to us to rearrange their appointment. The comfort and wellbeing of the dogs are our top priority.

Arriving for their appointment as cool and comfortable as possible will help ensure a safer and more enjoyable experience for them. If you are unable to safely bring your dog to their appointment, please reschedule with at least 48 hours' notice. Those who fail to notify us will incur a charge.

Remember: The pavements will also be hot!
