Italian Wall Lizard (Podarcis siculus) about to disappear down a hole. These are so quick off the mark and frightened of everything that I'm quite pleased with this photo. Usually I manage to snap a disappearing tale...

Scorpion all riled up! This Italian scorpion (Euscorpious italicus) has a sting that's meant to be as mild as a wasp sting...but I am not trying it out.

Apparently we're expecting to be 'knee deep' in these Vanessa cardui in the UK. This one is in Orichella National Park in Tuscany.

My favourite UK butterfly: the peacock (Inarchis io), there's just something about those blue eyespots. Taken with our EF 35-80 modified for macro lens in the garden on a Buddleia feeding.

spp.) snapped in bloom at the Eden project.

Orange tip butterfly (male) Anthocharis cardamines. One of the first of the season. The underside of the wings appear green, but it's an optical illusion made up of yellow and black scales.
