Bromley House Library
Independent historic library funded by member subscriptions in Nottingham city centre. New members welcome
Nottingham Subscription Library was founded in 1816 and moved in 1822 to its present home, Bromley House, which is centrally situated in the city on Angel Row. It is a dark red brick building built in 1752 as a ‘town house’ for George Smith, grandson of the founder of Smiths Bank, the oldest known provincial bank in the country.

As Volunteers' Week 2026 comes to a close we would like to say a huge thank you to our fantastic Bromley House Library Volunteers.
Without all of their hard work, we could not provide the wide range of services and activities that we do, including our events and tours, book conservation, cataloguing, shelving, book sales, our beloved bookmobile delivery service and of course our trustees. Our gardening volunteers keep our Georgian garden looking beautiful all year round and handy people look after repairs around the building. And last but not least, our knitting volunteers whose 'Lit Knits' and other woolly creations help raise funds for the library. All of our volunteers are also Bromley House members.
Last year, we worked with 129 volunteers who give approximately 2,800 hours per year (the equivalent of approximately £34,000 in staff time). Their impact is hugely valuable and valued.
Once again, a great big thank you to our all of our volunteers!

We checked them against our Bromley House Library collection and we hold 92 of them!
Our members can find some of them on display in our main library with a full list of the 100. Check to see how many you have read or are in your TBR pile.

Happy Birthday Sir David Attenborough and to mark his 100th there is a small display with some of the titles in our collection by him and about him. Our natural history collection is a favourite with our readers - with comfy chairs, a view of the garden and shelves to explore - what is there not to love?
