I had to post a lot of 7”s at the weekend and a comment from the Post Office employee that the parcels were “very small for vinyls” got me to thinking about the relative death of the 7” format in popular music.

Obviously the format still very much exists and Taylor Swift et al can sell a million of them at £25 a pop without thinking twice. Good on them, but for many of us, the huge increases in price vs the relative amount of music one is offered on the format has led to a decreased necessity for its existence when faced with the ease of making music available digitally.

For me, the 7” is still the perfect punk format. A concise and (comparatively) affordable way for a band to get their music into your ears and minds before or between albums. Something tangible that maybe you can take a punt on without having to shell out for a full album. And let’s not forget the humble split 7”. I personally discovered so many bands just by picking up a 7” by a band I liked with someone else I’d never heard of on the B-Side.

I guess I just wanted to say that Brassneck will continue to embrace the 7” format for the foreseeable future for new and established bands alike. Here’s a picture of a few of the more recent 7”s from the Brassneck back catalogue and I promise you there are more on the way soon.

In the meantime, what does everyone else think about the format?
