Councils spend over £150 million a year trying to stop disabled kids getting support 25/01/2026

So many Local Authorities hiding the costs of solicitors, barristers, staff time and associated appeal costs. Suspect this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Happy New Year to all, wishing you much Peace, Love and Sparkle during 2026.

We would like to pay our utmost respects and condolences to the family of the late, great, Sir James Mumby, who sadly left us on the 1st January this year. What a tower of a man, so compassionate, understanding and championed the dignity and respect of those most vulnerable people, throughout his life. He will be so missed, but his legacy will live on.

"The local authority is a servant and not a master – a truth which on occasions is too easily overlooked. Vulnerable adults look to the state – to the local authority – for the support, the assistance and provision of services, to which the law entitles them. They do not seek to be controlled by the state or by the local authority. And it is not for the state, in the guise of the local authority, to seek to exercise such control."

Government eyes abolition of SEND Tribunal 24/09/2025

Tribunal on the ground update:

We’re hearing and experiencing evidence of some Local Authorities delaying evidence, seeking adjournments, not sending working documents back - perhaps trying to string things out in the hope the law will have changed by the time the Appeal is heard.

Articles like this don’t help.

Government eyes abolition of SEND Tribunal 'Ground is being rolled' for major reform, as judges are told they will no longer be needed.

New inquiry: Human Rights of Children in the Social Care System in England - Committees - UK Parliament 24/07/2025

Interesting inquiry, the committee also wants to hear about experiences of families of children with additional needs.

New inquiry: Human Rights of Children in the Social Care System in England - Committees - UK Parliament Out of nearly 12 million children living in England, over 400,000 are in the social care system at any one time. Out of these, nearly 84,000 children in England are “in care” (i.e. being looked after by local authorities).
