Seeing a lot of discussion about Adolescence and people either going "but it was boring" orrrr completely missing the point entirely, especially racists idiots focusing on the knife element instead of what the show was actually about, so I thought I'd put my 2 pennies in...
misogyny, r**e culture, and overall incel ideology are not fringe beliefs, they are deeply embedded in society, especially in digital spaces nowadays. They are shaping the minds of our young men at a very alarming rate.
Social media platforms, gaming communities, and online forums like Reddit have become a breeding ground for toxic masculinity, and places that normalise the dehumanisation and disregard of women and their autonomy and safety.
This stuff isn’t just talk either, it has real world, violent consequences. The link between these ideologies and acts of harassment, assault, abuse and even mass violence/murder is very well documented.
When young men are radicalised into believing they are superior to women, or owed some kind of power over them, the result is a society where abuse is excused, victims are blamed, and violence escalates.
It is our responsibility, (especially parents, siblings, teachers, and mentors) to talk to our sons, brothers, nephews and the other young men in our lives.
Silence is allowing these dangerous narratives to thrive. We live in a world where violence against women and girls is brushed off and accepted.
There is a ra**st in the white house for god sake.
We must teach boys about respect, consent, and emotional intelligence before they turn to the internet for guidance and answers. We must teach them that the vitrol spewed by men such as Andrew Tate, Brian Atlas, Myron Gaines and other deeply misogynistic podcast bros is nothing more that that ramblings of deeply insecure, pathetic losers who fear confident, successful women.
Adolescence is a brilliant piece of media that captures this crucial stage of development, it highlights the vulnerability of young men(and women) to harmful ideologies, and the power of guidance in shaping their morals and values. Whilst I wish it would've gone deeper into the online culture, it is a powerful, thought provoking.
