Turn Every Stone, Inside Edge, The Colours You Paint Me.

With the song Turn Every Stone we enter The Colours era. This was part four of the evolution.

As the songs says, “there’s nothing left to hide”. The lyrics lay bare the emotional turmoil of a bully, a narcissist, a man child.

From the opening verse to the moody middle eight layered with dark emotion, the song tells the story of “the creature of all the lies”.

Turn Every Stone is where Inside Edge marry music and poetry to tell the story of giving it all for nothing in return.

There's so much behind Turn Every Stone, and it brings back painful memories. You can write about it, talk about it, shout it out loud and vent it. It never goes away, it just fades in time and becomes the distant past. It's your choice as to whether it stains your future or gives you strength and resilience.

You don't have to forgive, you don't have to forget, it's just knowing you can take that and use to be better than you were.

Rise above.

Does anyone remember So Strange?

As a song it was an outlier in relation to the music of Inside Edge, but it was catchy, melodic, simple, and uplifting. A song that you could merrily dance and sing along to.

So Strange was guaranteed to get people out of their seats and up bopping away to the upbeat tempo. It was a firm favourite live, and a frequent audience request as an encore.

Like Hellbound and Wall of Silence, So Strange was written in the Caged Bird era, continued beyond the Winter Flight era and into The Colours era. It stood the test of time and was always part of the live set list.

During the Caged Bird era Inside Edge were discussing the possibility of recording a couple of tracks at the legendary Strawberry Studios. Many a successful band had recorded there, including The Smiths, The Stone Roses, and Joy Division.

As a Manchester band that were based in Stockport, Strawberry Studios was iconic and personal to Inside Edge.

Inside Edge had begun its journey just around the corner from Strawberry Studios with an advert in the Rhythm House.

The producer at Strawberry Studios was John Pennington who still produces album and live projects. Whilst at Strawberry, John worked with The Smiths and The Happy Mondays.

We took in a rehearsal room demo of the songs ‘So Strange’ and ‘Wall of Silence’ and discussed the project with John in some detail.

Alas, and with some regret, we never got to record any tracks at Strawberry Studios.

So Strange was never recorded in any study sessions. Maybe it felt like an outlier, maybe it was just a great live song.

It was a song that deserved studio time in an iconic studio like Strawberry.

So Strange, another great song that feels like unfinished business.

Hellbound.

Hellbound was written in the Caged Bird era with Matt on vocals.

This was the evolution part two, Caged Bird, a time when an amazing amount of song writing took place.

Inside Edge had become a full time commitment and armed with new equipment and a dedicated rehearsal studio, Inside Edge wrote songs like Hellbound, Wall of Silence, and Cast a Shadow.

We wrote, rehearsed, and gigged full-time and being full-time allowed us to develop the identify and purpose of Inside Edge.

Looking back now, you have to give full credit to Matt and how he seamlessly took on his role. It was a natural progression, and the reason Inside Edge wrote so much material during this period of time.

Press and radio coverage helped promote Inside Edge to a wider audience to the point where you would hear your songs being played on the radio and strangers would say:

'Hey, I heard you on the radio last night'.

The 'fame' element wasn't sought out, but it did mean we were reaching new people with our music.

It was strange and surreal but a buzz that we were reaching a wider audience.

The pinnacle of this era was the Caged Bird Tour, taking in venues across the UK and gaining more press and radio coverage in the process.

Despite the musical success and momentum, we were penniless paupers, and relied on our families for support. We were very lucky.

Hellbound was one of those songs that captured the identity of Inside Edge, but it was never recorded in the studio. It's like unfinished business.
