There will be two talks elaborating on themes of autism and social communication, directly following lunch at 1.30.
โจWe will welcome two speakers who helped make this project come to life:
๐ฃ๏ธ 1.45PM: Dr Alexandra Sturrock, a speech & language therapist, will talk about how she undertook innovative interviews with autistic children, that aimed to elicit the children's genuine experiences. This research resulted in the quotes that have been used in this exhibition.
๐ฃ๏ธ 2.00PM: Natalie Linney, Campus Lead at Pinc College, will detail how the staff and students worked with the quotes to generate novel pieces of art. She will also explain how they created interpretations of the original text, while weaving in the artists' own experiences.
There will be a Q&A session following both talks, where you can ask any questions about the event, research, art or anything else that comes to mind!
We look forward to seeing you there.

Speech and language therapists at the The University of Manchester have been developing their understanding of how communication difficulties impact autistic children.
One significant study formed the basis of our exhibition: autistic girls and boys aged 9-14 years were interviewed so they could vocalise their personal struggles.
Quotations from the childrenโs interviews will be interpreted by students from Pinc College and inspire their displayed artwork.
As well as publishing online as an academic paper, the researchers designed an easy-to-follow poster about the findings (see picture)
Of course, please feel free to read or share the paper if you are interested!

๐๏ธMeet our featured artist! ๐๏ธ
Anastasia is an outstanding Ukrainian illustrator whose artwork typically centres around childrenโs characters and animals. Her surrealist and fantastical style will vividly bring to live the quotes from our original research project.
Anastasia is creating illustrations that portray experiences of autism and communication difficulties, such as feeling out of place in everyday conversations.
In combination with the studentsโ work from Pinc College, our exhibition will provide an enticing and informative interactive experience for everyone, autistic and non-autistic people alike.
