If you’re a runner, dog walker or recreational river user, you’re most likely to spot someone if they’re struggling in water, so you need to know who to call to help them!

If the person is in a lake, river, canal, or any other area of inland water in Kent or Medway, call 999 and ask for the fire service. If they’re in the sea, ask for the coastguard.

Making the right call in that moment can help to save someone’s life.

A family in had a lucky escape last night after a wax burner burnt through to a wicker basket and caused it to catch alight.

Thankfully, the smoke alarms sounded and woke the residents, who were able to escape and call 999.

The fire was out when crews arrived, but the house was heavily smoked logged, so firefighters used high-pressured fans to ventilate the home and one person was checked over as a precaution.

To help reduce the risk of an emergency, remember:

✅ Make sure candles and wax burners are extinguished and fully cooled before going out or to bed
✅ Have enough working smoke alarms in your home, at least one on every floor, and check them regularly

✅ Only throw smoking materials away when they have fully cooled.
✅ Use a sturdy ashtray on a stable surface.
❌ Never throw ci******es onto the ground, especially during spells of hot weather when the grass can be extremely dry and cause fires to spread quickly.
