I’m on my THIRD bottle of K18. As a cosmetic scientist, here’s why it keeps making it back into my routine.

Hair is mostly keratin protein, and bleach, colour and heat can disrupt its internal structure.

Some evenings remind you why you fell in love with science.

In 1957, in a little Parisian pharmacy, a story began. Not with a promise of eternal youth, but with a belief that skincare could be gentle, effective and rooted in science.

Nearly seven decades later, I found myself spending a cosy evening with the people carrying that curiosity forward.

We talked molecules, formulations and the science behind Derm Correxion. But what stayed with me was something far more human: the passion of the people behind the products.

As a cosmetic scientist, I spend so much of my life looking at what goes into a formula. Evenings like this remind me to celebrate the minds, the questions and the years of research behind it.

Because a beautiful formula is never just a collection of ingredients.

It is a story of curiosity, patience and the quiet determination to make something better. 🤍

A haircut, but through the eyes of a cosmetic scientist.

I had the pleasure of having my hair cut by Michael Van Clarke himself, experiencing his signature Diamond Dry Cut™. At . If you don’t know him🤔British Vogue has spotlighted Michael Van Clarke for his pioneering Diamond Dry Cut™, a technique he spent 30 years developing to sculpt hair around its natural texture, density and movement.

What fascinated me was the technical thinking behind it. Hair behaves very differently wet versus dry. Water temporarily changes hydrogen bonding within the keratin structure, increasing elasticity and altering the way the fibre stretches, contracts and falls. So cutting hair dry allows the stylist to work with the hair much closer to its real-life state.

The Diamond Dry Cut™ takes this further, working with the three-dimensional shape of the head, natural fall, density, movement and individual growth patterns rather than simply creating a shape on wet, stretched hair.

And, of course, I couldn’t finish my conversation without talking science. 🧪

I learnt so much from Michael about the thinking behind his haircare products too, from fibre condition and breakage to how formulation can influence the way hair feels, moves and behaves.

For me, that was the most interesting part. Haircutting is geometry, but great hair is also material science.

A fascinating morning learning from someone who has spent decades understanding both.

If your skin feels dry even after moisturising, the issue is often your skin barrier, not just lack of hydration.

Your skin barrier is made of corneocytes (skin cells) held together by lipids, mainly ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids. Think of it like a brick wall. When the lipids are depleted, water escapes. This is called transepidermal water loss (TEWL).
