Mercedes on her practice -
"I tell stories, often for those who don’t have voices. I draw directly onto clay, spontaneous, mythic, feminine marks that celebrate the mess and magic of lived experience. I hand-build plates, bowls, tiles and sculptural vessels, often casting parts of mine and my children’s bodies alongside fruit and animal parts, blending the sacred with the everyday.
My work is tactile, emotionally layered, and full of sagging forms, pooling glazes, and imperfect surfaces, speaking to care, rupture and repair.
My practice expands into immersive environments: hanging macramé sculptures, embroidered textiles, sound installations.
At its core, my work centres on the body, home and time—where softness, fury and tenderness live side by side. I use traditional materials in contemporary, sometimes subversive ways to question value, permanence and the invisibility of domestic labour.
I live and work in Margate, I’m a permanent studio holder at Tracey Emin’s TKE Studios."

‘Illuminated’ is the first of an annual summer show set within The Royal Society of Arts' historic headquarters.
The first modern-day exhibition in Britain was held at The Royal Society of Arts in 1760 and marked the first time contemporary artists were invited to showcase their work together.
Building on this history, the theme and title of this inaugural exhibition is Illuminated.
This exhibition invites over 100 contemporary artists to respond to themes of enlightenment, social value, and collective progress—the foundational principles upon which The Royal Society of Arts was established.
A new chapter for AOAP Projects, Illuminated launches as a curated sales exhibition—expanding beyond our auction model while continuing to support social impact.
All works are presented at an intimate scale (no larger than 7 × 7 inches), with 50% of proceeds going to artists.
A new moment in London’s cultural calendar.
We'll see you there!

Steyaert explores the relationship between sculpture and painting, creating works that float between the mediums, drawing on themes of grandeur, memory, and sensory immersion. Her practice explores silicone’s aesthetic quality, alongside canvas, oil paint and wood, drawing from architecture and painting. Steyaert’s creative process is intuitive, pouring and shaping silicone meticulously. The resulting delicate yet powerful forms challenge our perception of painting and sculpture, capturing movement and abstraction.
Steyaert’s art encourages alternative perspectives and interpretations, evading traditional boundaries of painting and sculpture. It embodies the transgressive nature of contemporary artistic expression, an ever-evolving practice inviting curiosity and contemplation.
