At Samarkand Design we source vintage textiles from around the world to create unique and distinctive home accessories.

Samarkand Design grew out of a passion for textiles. It was founded by Hilly Grumbar and Carrie Hart; a pair bound not just by friendship but also by their shared passion for design and artisanal craftsmanship. As inspired by the classic ‘English’ look as we are by our extensive travels across India and Africa, this first collection of our favourite things brings together the vibrant and the eclec

For the first time ever (I think 🤔) we have a beautiful sunny Bank Holiday ahead of us - and as if you even needed anything more, we have a special little surprise for you on our Summer Light Collection. Go to the website and use the code Summer15 on some of our most summery offerings - seat pads for your outside seating, block printed tablecloths to brighten up your alfresco dining, Moroccan Kilims and stunning kalamkari printed lampshades.

Have a fabulous weekend!

So excited to launch our latest addition to our lamp Collection. We usually call our lamps after Indian girls but these jute lamps are definitely boys and English names are easier to spell so we are calling him Stan.

Part of a new range of ethically made jute products we love the texture and softness they bring. So watch this space for…..Billy, Frank and Wilbur - I am literally plucking these names out….

Let us know what you think?

I am often asked where the name Samarkand came from. Many people have never heard of this great city in Uzbekistan, full of magisterial mosques and stunning architecture. It was once at the centre of the Silk Roads - a point between East and West. I felt it conjured up what I love best about what we do - bringing the artistry and craftsmanship from the East to adorn our homes and enrich our lives. And we do it in partnership with the many talented artisans we work with.
Sometimes I think why did I choose such a hard word to remember or even pronounce properly but I still love what it represents.
What do you think of it?

Every Tuesday we trawl through our Aladdins Cave to bring you our personal favourites of the day.
Of course I love them all - and have no favourites (just like my children!) but sometimes a pretty pairing will catch my eye so here’s my latest round up.
Do any of these catch your eye?

We had an amazing time at .curatedstore, meeting awesome people and brands, but the highlight was catching up with the fabulous Tamara while we got to play shop for a couple of days. Vase and basket from and seat pads from us.

I’ve been spending ages trying to get my head around how to use AI for Instagram and make everything slicker and more professional - but it just does my head in!
So here’s a quick video showing me doing what I like best - playing with beautiful textiles on a glorious sunny day in Devon!
Is there anyone else out there suffering from the same frustrations and uncertainty of how to use this amazing tech ? Maybe it’s my age 🥹
