Highgate Poets
Est. 1977. In 2017 we celebrated our 40th anniversary. We meet monthly in ea other's homes. Live in London? Apply. Send 6 poems to [email protected]
Last night we had our monthly poetry event at the Harringay Arms, Crouch End. We heard some wonderful and inspiring poetry from a variety of poets. Chrissy Evangelou fid her inspiring, raw love poetry, Alan Wolson (he of the waxed Daliesque moustachio) shared some of his deftly lyrical and alliterative poetry, Tess our wonderful Jewish le***an poet, a friendship that started when I worked in a criminal justice office at the Angel - lovely story poems about her Jewish grandma,Rosemary Wolfson - what a great performer telling of her naughty teenage years in the 60s (and you look SO respectable Rosemary) and Alex and Michael Jon Pierce , both former Highgate Poets and so different in style ...Alex Allen's carefully placed and sometimes random words, Michael's more formal style.
Finally Mary Duggan and I weaved our various poems throughout the evening. I ended the night with this poem which I wrote a long time ago and seemed to 'strike a cord' ...
Sometimes
Sometimes words
gallop from my mouth
in a disordered rush
and eyes glaze over
under the barrage.
Sometimes,
when its warmth that I feel,
cold razor words fall from my lips
and the distance to bridge
becomes a glacial chasm.
Sometimes words
are so futile and grey
for painting passions
that could explode in a rainbow
of numberless colours
that I despair.
