Creating an 'old' brand for social media posts for Blackheath hockey club was a fun project. We wanted a look that reflected age but one that would last a good few years without actually ageing itself. We have the same socials every year so wanted to reuse and repeat the style of images that would be recognised by club members as a club event or club message.

I also designed a large club banner which we want to get printed and displayed in the club house or on the pitch at some point. I have showed the full banner in one image and zoomed in on the other two so you can see the details.

One of the fun aspects of this design is the ripped paper revealing information underneath which reflects what the main message was about. Be it that 'umpires are always rewarded with lots of beer' or that 'shin pads are not necessary for the club dinner'.

As a member of Blackheath hockey club, the oldest hockey club in the world. I took it upon myself to update their logo so it was easier to use on the social media posts I was designing.

There wasn't a lot wrong with the old logo, I like the way it ties into the Eltham College logo, where we play our games. However the main issue was the amount of space around the icon and text. There is too much red space and detracts from the logo itself. The font size of the name is also very small and the font
quite thin so with that much extra space around it the balance between icon and font is slightly off. You definitely see the redsquare first then white icon and the name last in this design.

The hockey stick illustrations were a little simple and could be more clearly defined, especially the top of the stick where it was lacking in symmetry.

So taking all these observations on board, I updated the design as you can see.

The main purpose of the redesign however was to create a horizontal logo that could work better on websites and web banners. The need to have a logo that could work on white was a nice to have as well. The ability to abbreviate the logo to BEHC for internal use on smaller internal comms was also accepted by the committee.

It is lovely when a past client comes back to you with more work especially when it means their small business is doing well. JA Whitney Building Contractors got in touch to see if I could do them a logo for their new Electrical Services part of the business.
This was a fun job to do and thankfully one made easier given the way I had designed the original logo. The first logo used green to highlight an extension in the icon. So for this logo I added a light inside the house and introduced a new key colour, orange to show the light shining in the house (yellow has too many accessibility issues online). I also made the extension part of this logo grey as a subtle nod to the original logo design.
