On the 2nd June the UK set a target to cut emissions ‌by around 87% by 2040 from 1990 levels as it increases efforts to meet net zero goals that it says will help to curb energy costs and create jobs, but it has yet to outline how the goal will be met.
Reducing carbon emissions would be consistent with international efforts to curb rising global temperatures and the Labour government says cleaner energy can help to insulate the country from fossil fuel price volatility, which has been exacerbated by the Iran war.
Meeting the government's emissions goal would likely require major investment in low carbon technology, including renewable power, heat pumps and electric vehicles and significant lifestyle changes such as reduced meat consumption, the Climate Change Committee said last year, when recommending the target.
Aviation emissions also need to fall, which would require less flying unless the development of sustainable fuel can be accelerated.
Last year the opposition Conservative Party withdrew its support for the 2050 net zero target, calling it impossible.
So far Britain's greenhouse gas emissions have fallen by around 54% from 1990 levels, including a 2% year-on-year fall in 2025. That was largely due to a drop in industrial sector emissions after blast furnace closures in the iron and steel sectors.

EVs set to make up 30% of all new cars worldwide - Energy Live News 09/06/2026

🚗Electric Vehicle News🚗

Electric cars are on course to make up almost 30% of all new car sales worldwide this year, as the shift away from oil gathers pace during the Middle East energy crisis, according to the International Energy Agency. The IEA’s latest Global EV Outlook forecasts 23 million electric car sales in 2026, up from more than 20 million last year, when EVs accounted for a quarter of all new cars sold globally.

That is now becoming a structural shift in the car market rather than a niche trend, with around 40 countries already seeing electric cars take at least 10% of new sales.
The report says the growth also matters for energy security, because the war in the Middle East has triggered the largest oil supply shock in history and exposed drivers to volatile fuel prices.

Energy Live News shared Elexon's latest statistics for half-hourly meter installations: more than 8.4 million electricity meters have now been moved onto half-hourly settlement, as the energy sector races towards one of the biggest market overhauls since privatisation.

Elexon said the milestone marks a major step towards a smarter and more flexible electricity system, with suppliers now under growing pressure to complete the transition before new regulatory deadlines bite.

The move to Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS) means energy usage can be tracked every 30 minutes rather than through estimated profiles, allowing suppliers to create more dynamic tariffs and flexibility services.

Elexon said it wants 80% of all UK electricity meters transitioned by October 2026 ahead of full market migration by May 2027.
