Today we hosted a health awareness event for people with learning disabilities and their carers. The event was coordinated with local organisations and included...
- A live soup making demonstration ๐ฒ
- Stalls with lots of information and easy read guides on topics such as smoking cessation, cancer screening, nutrition and more ๐
- Presentations on nutrition, bowel cancer screenings, breast cancer screenings and cervical cancer screenings ๐ฃ
- A breathwork exercise from a local yoga instructor ๐ง๐พโโ๏ธ
- The opportunity for attendees to receive their Covid and Flu vaccines๐
The event received great feedback with one carer commenting that ''This event has been amazing, really accessible (including the toilets!) with informative short and sweet presentations. We'll be back next year!''
Thank you to everyone who helped make this event happen, and to everyone who attended ๐

๐๐ฟ
Keen to practice what we preach, our staff members also had the opportunity to have their Covid and Flu vaccines ๐ As healthcare staff we recognise the importance of protecting ourselves and the people we care for this autumn and winter ๐

Whilst a diabetes diagnosis can be scary, we wanted to share a case study that highlights the support available to patients that can help to put type 2 diabetes into remission โฎ
Health and wellbeing coach Nana first started working a patient in his mid 40s back in June of this year. He was a driver and newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and his HBA1c was 51. She suggested he join the "Path to Remission Programme" which achieves great results for most patients, but he wasnโt keen. He was confident he could make the changes on his own with support from Nana.
He took advantage of a free trial for a a freestyle libre sensor which helped him figure out which foods were pushing up his blood glucose levels and really cut back on them and tried different alternatives. He completely cut out rice and takeaways, started eating a lot more vegetables and switched to bulgur wheat ๐ฅฆ๐ฅ๐
Previously as a driver, he sat around in his car a lot when he was waiting for his clients. He completely changed that and spent that time walking around instead, and set himself a target to do 10,000 steps a day which he often surpassed ๐ฃ He also started playing football once a week with his friends โฝ๏ธHe did a repeat HBA1c test in September and his HBA1c was 38. He is now in remission and has not had any medication since his diagnosis in June.
Did you know that if you are between 40 and 74 years old you may be eligible for a free health check at your local GP surgery? This can identify if you are at higher risk of developing diabetes and you can receive a diabetes test if appropriate.
