TEN YEARS GONE! RIP Bowie
08/01/2025
Jailhouse Oddity!
Mr Presley & Mr Bowie shared the same birthday so I merged these two mugshots. Here's a few interesting parallels.
David Bowie & Elvis were both on the same record label, RCA. Bowie named his last LP Black Star.
Back in 1960, Elvis Presley recorded a song called Black Star, which was intended as the title track for a film.
When the film's title was changed to Flaming Star, the song was re-recorded with the new title. The original version of Black Star was released posthumously in 1986.
The lyrics to Elvis's Black Star have a distinct kindred theme.
Every man has a black star
A black star over his shoulder
And when a man sees his black star
He knows his time, his time has come
Rumour has it that in 1975 Bowie wrote the song "Golden Years" for Presley but he turned it down thinking it wasn't right for him.
In 1977 Elvis asked Bowie to produce his next LP but he died 6 months later.
And... The unicode for this black star icon ★ is this U+2605 which happens to be the date of Mick Ronson's birthday. 26th May.

Ever wondered who Owen Coffin was? You may remember this song as a kid, it being the theme tune for Weekend World. But did you know the tune LWT picked for a Sunday afternoon politics broadcast was based around a story of cannibalism? Nantucket Sleighride (to Owen Coffin) – a fictional account of a true episode involving 19th-century whaling ship The Essex. Owen Coffin was the youngest guy in the long boat they sent to harpoon a s***m whale. They got dragged out to sea and were close to starvation, so they drew straws, and the kid got the short one. They ate him. The term ‘a Nantucket Sleighride’ refers to the whale diving deep with harpoons in its back, then flying to the surface and pulling the long boats out at speed.” With lyrics by Cream producer Felix Pappalardi's wife Gail Collins “The opening lines, ‘Goodbye, little Robin-Marie, don’t try following me/Don’t cry little Robin-Marie, ’cos you know I’m coming home soon,’ were about herself and addressed the fact that Felix was cheating with a girl called Robin-Marie. 13 years later and a lot of He**in abuse Gail shot and killed Felix.

Forty-six years ago, Punk Rock achieved a significant milestone by gracing the front cover of the esteemed newspaper supplement, the "Sunday Times magazine." The article, authored by Gordon Burn and complemented by captivating photographs taken by David Montgomery, featured an extensive section dedicated to The Clash, highlighted by a striking large photo of the band. This momentous event marked a turning point for Punk Rock, solidifying its presence in mainstream media and cementing its place in music history. Others may tell you it was the beginning of the end of Punk Rock.
