THE ART OF MOVEMENT:

The structure and functional organization of the brain is modulated constantly by our movement, language, thought processes and emotions.

Interestingly the current trend in gyms and health clubs is incorporating ‘functional movement’ and ‘primal movement conditioning’ into their exercise rotas, hence utilizing knowledge of the evolution of human movement.

Whatever the end goal of your training, there is value in including degrees of variability in movement. There are two lines of thought here.

Firstly, to create a solid base and skill set a degree of movement consolidation must occur. The brain’s primary motor cortex is responsible for controlling our body movements and this area of the brain must undergo training through repetition in order to achieve a certain level of competency.

Secondly however, for this degree of competency and fluidity from our primary motor cortex to be built upon and progressed what must then happen is the continued growth and development of new neural synapses or connections. This is where the primal movement system and ‘play’ come to the forefront.

Social Nutrition: MORE THAN JUST FOOD!
This topic is an essay in it's own right so I won’t ramble.

In essence our evolutionary biology means we belong in tribes! From the Tahumara tribe based in the copper canyons high the Mexican Foothills to the Awa tribe deep in the Brazilian amazon these communities still exist and survive via means of ancient hunting and survival methods. Their level of social interaction is deep rooted and founded upon survival and is hugely meaningful. In essence their social nutrition is of very high quality. And this is precisely the point, Quality!

Who we interact with and how we communicate can impact upon the quality of our lives hugely. We obviously now live in a tech generation where there is pressure to keep up to date with the latest in innovation, but are we in fact leaving the message of social nutrition and communication even further behind in terms of how we should be interacting with peers, colleagues, friends and family. Certainly food for thought (excuse the pun)
