Britain's worst nuclear accident unfolded in Cumbria 69 years ago today 10/10/2026

** Windscale / Sellafield **

TODAY, 69 years ago, a fire broke out on the Cumbrian coast which would become the worst nuclear accident in British history. On October 10, 1957, workers at Windscale, the site now known as Sellafield, discovered that Pile No. 1, one of two reactors built as part of Britain's post-war nuclear weapons programme, was on fire. The reactors had been producing plutonium for Britain's atomic weapons programme, with the Number One Pile having become operational in 1950.

Today is National Atomic Veterans Awareness Day

Today we remember. We remember whom aren’t with us anymore but also who are still here.

On the 1st October nuclear associations and charities came together with nuclear veterans and their families and we remembered the sacrifices of the community with a service at the NMA. It was a lovely day with a slight breeze, the sun shining and the memorial stone front and centre.

Nuclear veterans and their families sat while the Very Revd Nicholas Frayling spoke so fondly of the community . The last post played by the wonderful Antonio and wreaths were laid. Thank you Terry and Malcolm with one of our Directors laying a wreath.
We then all sat and chatted while eating cake drinking tea with laughter and maybe our youngest attendee charming everyone with her smile.

Today is a day to remember but we remember everyday .

May they rest in peace

Thank you to the NCCF for organising the day

Five well-known faces have added their voice to the campaign for truth and justice for Britain's Nuclear Test Veterans, their descendants and families.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, Actor Dame Joanna Lumley, Olympian Dame Kelly Holmes , adventurer Levison Wood, actor Sue Holderness and actor Antony cotton call on him to honour the commitment he made to the veterans before he took office.

They wrote: "The average veteran is now in his late 80s or 90s. There is no time for this to become another promise that quietly disappears now you're in office. It must be done properly, and it must be done quickly."

Alan Owen, co-founder of LABRATS and son of a nuclear test veteran said:

"To have the backing of such well-known and respected faces has given the veterans a big morale boost! We have been campaigning for three generations now.

"Many veterans have grandchildren who are also facing health impacts that have been passed down. But despite decades of cover-up by the MOD, we have never given up our fight."
