During COP26, we attended the Vogue Business and Google Summit and it became clear during these panel discussions that government interventions are required to mandate a sustainability shift. As Michael Sadowski, a climate consultant, said: ‘We cannot ask the consumer to take responsibility for the £2 T-shirt.’
Ugandan designer Bobby Kodale said that the Global North is dumping its ‘garbage fast fashion’ in the Global South, which is both ethically and environmentally unsustainable and is merely masking the problems of overproduction and overconsumption rather than resolving them.
James Roger, Director of Sustainability at The Realreal, agreed that keeping quality garments in circulation as long as possible will help shape a circular and sustainable future.
Gonḉalo Crux, CEO and co-founder of platformE, argued that we need to learn from other industries, such as car manufacturing, that have been building a long-term legacy within their supply chains. Currently, he said, the ’Fashion Caravan’ exploits cheaper manufacturing regions for a short period of time without any commitment, then moves quickly onto the next.

Is sustainability a legacy and is our legacy sustainability?
Following the COP26 UN Climate Conference in Glasgow, there has been much discussion of how the fashion industry must change the way it operates, from greater supply chain transparency to deep cuts in emissions. We have also seen the influence of conscious consumers across all generations, with growing pressure on brands to live up to their sustainability promises. COP26 also revealed that there are still many challenges ahead. The world’s top polluters, China and India, resisted the ‘phase out’ of coal, committing only to a ‘phase down’, which will impact the fashion industry as these are two of the biggest manufacturing nations. However, it is also clear that brands cannot expect their suppliers to foot the entire bill for reducing their carbon footprint. As with so much else, it must be a partnership.
The fashion takeaways from COP26 The UN Climate Conference is over, with major lessons for the fashion industry on policy change, sourcing and digital transparency.

Fashion Fit Technology Is a Key Tool for Made-On-Demand Fashion
Made-on-demand and customisation are the two big topics in the world of apparel as the pandemic shines an unflattering light on the industry’s wasteful production. But while made-on-demand has the potential to drastically reduce the amount of clothing produced each year, to move to a truly sustainable business model - and satisfy consumers’ increasing desire for customisation - fashion brands and retailers should incorporate fit technologies to ensure their garments are not returned by customers.
