Sapphire is September’s birthstone, traditionally associated with loyalty, sincerity and wisdom — and there are so many lovely ways we can work it into a signet ring. We’ve picked three very different commissions from the Rebus archive to show you some of our favourites.⁠

✨️ In the first, two 14mm x 12mm Oxford Ovals — one in 14ct white gold and one in 14ct yellow gold — are set with a sapphire alongside white and yellow diamonds and tsavorite, framing engraved monograms.⁠

✨️ In the second, a hand-engraved tiger stands upon cherry blossom beneath the night sky, with 1.4mm pink and blue sapphires star set into a 14ct yellow gold Oxford Court signet.⁠

✨️ And in the third, an Oxford Oval 55 is engraved with an initial and pavé set with a sapphire and two rubies.⁠

This bespoke seal engraving was designed to make use of the whole ring. The crest and motto take centre stage, while a hand and fern design - a nod to the owner's New Zealand heritage - travels onto the shoulders, allowing the story to continue beyond the face.

One stone, many stories 💙

From a traditional coat of arms to a single initial, a rabbit or a duck with her duckling, sardonyx lends itself to designs both symbolic and deeply personal.

And the stone itself can be just as individual. Petrol blue may be its most familiar guise, but sardonyx ranges through softer blues to much rarer shades of red - each revealing its own contrast as the engraver cuts through the layers.
