About Tarof (Taarof), an Iranian tradition - Learn Persian (Farsi) with Chai and Conversation 04/04/2021

Taarof or Tarof (Persian: تعارف‎)

One of our Farsi learners asked to explain Tarof bit more as it can be a bit confusing for non Iranians.

Meaning below is from Wikipedia

Taarof is a ritual politeness that levels the playing field and promotes equality in a hierarchical culture.[2] Taarof between friends, or a host and guest, emphasizes the value of friendship as a priority to everything else in the world.

Now let me explain my way and hopefully it will make it easier. A lot of time Tarof happens because person is trying to show respect and appreciation of their company.

For example if you are walking through the door with someone older than you, you should always let them go in first but this is not as easy as it sounds as the older person will insist otherwise and this can go on for a while. It can be exhausting and time consuming but Iranians are grown up with this tradition and they like it.

Another example is paying for the bills at the restaurant. Your waiter will tell you Ghabel Nadare which means it’s on the house but this is pure Tarofing and they don’t mean this at all. You should insist to pay and after couple of time they will accept the payment.

Omid Djalili the comedian that lives in UK has few clips that I have shared the link below with regards to this topic. Also found another clip that might be useful.
