“I’m still in a bit of a daze, because I didn’t do it for all this. I did it because I was just super-frustrated in my house. I guess I was just so used to expressing myself all the time, every two days, out doing a show somewhere new. So I just ordered the oil paints and the canvas.”

is slated to auction off a painting at Sotheby’s Contemporary Curated sale, titled Mama Goes to Market. The painting – which he worked on during lockdown – depicts a market scene in Nigeria, an ode to his African heritage and is among a selection of pieces that will be sold, by Chito, Slawn, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, Ouattara Watts and Frank Bowling.

Adjaye set to create memorial dedicated to West African slaves in Barbados 🇧🇧

Not long after gaining independence, the country has enlisted architecture studio to design a memorial, museum and research institute focusing on the impact of slavery for Bridgetown, Barbados.

The studio continues "Drawing upon the technique and philosophy of traditional African tombs, prayer sites and pyramids, the memorial is conceived as a space that contemporaneously honours the dead, edifies the living, and manifests a new diasporic future for Black civilization,"

It has been estimated that almost 400,000 enslaved Africans were transported to Barbados during the 17th and 18th centuries, while the island was a British colony.
