I paint pictures of everyday folk. I’m drawn (no pun intended) to painting people.

I occasionally dip my toe into say, a landscape, only to find it empty without human beans in it. I want to capture the moment, that quirky mannerism, the hunch of the shoulder, the rolled foot – whatever it maybe, I see it, and see it as a painting. Sometimes what I’ve seen is obvious in the image, other times it’s about my imagination – having guessed at the persons background or thoughts at tha

What are we like??

Not sure if she had had a sherbert or two for lunch, but there she was completely sparko early afternoon, and getting pinker by the minute. I’m guessing she’ll be feeling it later on!

And what am I like?

Why can’t I just enjoy looking at the scenery? Instead, I’m endlessly imagining conversations, and clocking our behaviour. Ho hum. It takes all sorts! Vive la difference!

I’m taking a break from my normal work, and experimenting with small works, playing with different mediums and surfaces. And while playing, I thought I would take the opportunity to look at women who have lived extraordinary lives in some way. This will be an occasional, ongoing series.

First up is ‘Tussy’

Eleanor Marx, known as Tussy to her family, was the fourth daughter of Karl Marx. In her short life she became a champion of workers, and women’s, rights.

In 1890, she was a pivotal organiser of the very first London May Day demonstration, (so today seemed an appropriate day to share), where she addressed 250,000 workers in Hyde Park, demanding an 8-hour day.

She had already been part of the demonstrations known as Bloody Sunday of 1887, in Trafalgar Square; helped build the ‘New Unionism’ movement; and was a key voice in the 1889 dockers strike, speaking to 100,000 in Hyde Park.

Eleanor went on to found the first ever women’s branch of the Gas Workers Union. And at Crosse & Blackwell, the female onion skinners endured really hazardous working conditions. Eleanor rallied 400 of them, formed a union, demanded an 8-hour day, better pay, and working conditions, and then went on strike! Crosse & Blackwell caved to their demands within a week.

She translated her father’s writings into English, as well as stage work of Ibsen’s, actually took to the stage alongside George Bernard Shaw, and basically lived a remarkable life. Sadly, her relationship with Richard Aveling ended in her taking her own life at the age of 43.

We managed to scoot down to Chichester today, because I've really, really been wanting to see exhibition 'Mothering' before it ends this weekend.

And Im SO glad we made it. I was bowled over by the warmth and tenderness in all her work - and jealous of the scale!! Fabulous.

I completely get why this show has garnered so much attention, and, as ever, so grateful to and the gallery team for staging another epic show.

And of course the William Nicholson delivered too!

Happy day 😊

AppArt got off to a great start yesterday. We had to come later to the PV because it was so crowded!!

Always a fabulous mix of professional and amateur work. And I really appreciate that level playing field. You have to look up the name and price in the catalogue.

Fab to see sold out on the night. Bravo Fee!! And great to see Stained Glass by Rachel Mulligan , not just her amazing stained glass, but she was in the room, making some fabulous sketches. And I always have to stop and give the work of a proper squizz, because he's jolly good, and I learn a lot from looking!

Thanks so much to Evelyn & Gwyn and all the team, for another fabulous exhibition.

Open daily 10am to 4pm until 18th

Just finishing my little pic for this years which is happening in the Hague, Netherlands, benefitting those affected by Alzheimer's through art.

These guys rock! Its always a great iniative to be part of. Founded by artist and author - I was over the moon that he chose my work to feature in the 2023 edition. Plus in the blog on their website you can find an interview with me.

There's still lots of time to register if you want to take part. Register by 6th April, and deadline for artwork to arrive is April 13th. But I'm hoping I can get mine there by 9th March to be included in the printed catalogue 😊, which is fabulously produced, and available for pre-order now! Just saying....

Huge thanks to this years curator who will be working her socks off for us all, as all art is shared across the socials, and there's a physical exhibition June 6th & 7th, followed by online sales from the 10th.

Do take part if you can - spread the love ❤️

All the pinks align 😄

Love this moment when my painting 'Pink Hat' is being admired by these two lovelies in their pink hats. And then as a bonus there's a pink sweatshirt too!!!

'Pink Hat' is currently on show for the fabulous Winter Group Show at the lovely in Deal. It's always such a treat to be in the mix, as curates a wonderful mix of work from a broad and interesting range of artists, truly something for everyone.

The gallery is open daily Tues to Sat, 10am to 4pm, with the showing running until Saturday 31st January.

We had such a fun afternoon yesterday. in Mayfair for an afternoon of brilliant live Motown, and then a DJ. It was all a bit beautifully nuts. We managed a little bit of sketching but spirits were high, and spirits were flowing, if you get my drift, so no one was sitting still at all. Instead everyone was up boogying, including me 😁
