The deadline for applications is 1 May 2026. The Award will cover the tuition fees only for the MA Human Rights for entry in September 2026.

As part of the 30th Anniversary of Human Rights Education at the ,

we will be profiling alumni and currents students on our MA and PhD programmes to highlight their contributions to securing human rights.

⭐ This month's alum is Antonia Mulvey ⭐

Antonia Mulvey is the Founder and Executive Director of Legal Action Worldwide (LAW). She is a British lawyer specialised in international human rights law, international criminal law, and refugee law. Antonia has extensive experience working with the United Nations and international organisations and has practiced criminal and refugee law at leading human rights firms in the UK.

Throughout her career she has advised governments on judicial and legislative reforms in conflict and crises countries. She represents survivors of human rights violations and international crimes – including conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV) – in Syria, the occupied Palestinian territory, Ukraine, Sudan, Myanmar, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Somalia, Lebanon and Sri Lanka.

She has been appointed multiple times as an UN investigator specialising in sexual violence and violations against children as war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide.

On 3 March 2026, The Commonwealth, the International Commission of Jurists and the Institute of Commonwealth Studies – together with the Permanent Mission of to the United Nations in Geneva – held a side event on the margins of the on-going 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council to showcase and discuss their Practitioners’ Guide on a human rights-based approach to criminal law, including to the decriminalization of conduct associated with poverty, homelessness and status. Speakers teased out and debated the pertinence and necessity of a human rights-based approach to criminal law with respect to the criminalization of conduct associated with poverty, homelessness and status.

⭐ This month's alum is Shahindha Ismail ⭐

Shahindha Ismail is the Founder and Director of the Maldivian Democracy Network (MDN). She advocated for hundreds of protesters arbitrarily detained and tortured during the movement for democracy in the Maldives from 2004. Some of her areas of work also include freedom of expression, assembly and association, protection of human rights defenders and countering violent extremism and religious fundamentalism. She has been engaged in policy analysis, human rights research, and international advocacy for over twenty years. Shahindha was the president of the Police Integrity Commission from 2009 to 2012 and represented civil society at the Prisons Audit Commission in 2018/19.

Apply NOW for a full scholarship to the MA in Human Rights by distance learning!!!

We are delighted to be partnering with the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK to offer 5 full scholarships for the September 2026 intake to our MA in Human Rights by distance learning.

In 2026, these scholarships are aimed at applicants from a limited number of Low and Middle Income Commonwealth states. They are aimed at those unable to study in the UK for financial and other reasons.

Candidates with a track record of promoting the human rights of marginalised groups are encouraged to apply.
