A lotttttt of scalp conditions flare up this time of year ❄️

And of course, as hairdressers, we’re still not given anything CLOSE to sufficient training in recognising differences, knowing what to do and ultimately supporting our clients 🥲

Save this visual as a handy guide, and head to our website for info on causes, solutions and more 🙂

Twas the last Saturday before Christmas and all was chaos…

Not to say you should use a higher developer - we’re a big fan of low and slow. But it just doesn’t give you more lift 🤷‍♀️

More control? Yes.
More time? Certainly.
More lift? Sorry.

Potentially POTENTIALLY you may be able to push the hair ever so slightly further if you’re roasting it on low rather than grilling it on high. But it’s going to be marginal, if at all.

And if you’re messing with margins like that we urge you to cover your tracks HARD when it comes to home care etc.

So go on. Tag a friend etc 🙂

And now that you know what you’re working with, go to our previous post to see when to use Acidic and when to use Alkaline toners 🙂

You’re welcome 😇

Let’s talk hair colour product theory… 👀

Colours and toners sit in 2 main categories: Acidic and Alkaline.

▪️The alkaline ones will contain an ingredient that has the power to open the hair’s cuticles, usually ammonia or MEA.

Opening the cuticles allows colours to lighten, product vibrant shades and cover up to 100% grey/white hair on natural hair.

However it also means that these things might start happening when you don’t want them to… ever toned highlights or a balayage and the hair in between starts to lift and go warm? 😬

▪️Acidic colours don’t have the ‘cuticle opening’ ingredient in so are most noticeable when used on previously coloured hair - where the cuticles have already been opened. OR they can be used on natural hair to lightly colour the surface of strands - giving more of a ‘sheen’ or a glaze with little to no grey coverage.

This makes them perfect for toning, precolouring or colouring any hair that is highlighted where you don’t want to affect the natural in between, at least not to any dramatic extent. Or to create a low maintenance, subtle effect on natural hair.

Having educated for professional hair brands for over 10 years, founder Anneliese started Humankind Hair in something of a bid to fall back in love with the industry.

‘After working brand side, I was fed up with education for the purpose of sales. Our job was to go into salons every month and convince hairdressers they had a problem - which they may or may not have - then provide them a ‘solution’. This of course would be a new shampoo, colour shade or styling product that they probably didn’t need.’

Feeling jaded, Anneliese considered quitting the industry altogether.

‘Social media had become part of my job, and I enjoyed it. So I studied digital marketing at UAL, thinking I’d have a complete change. But soon after, COVID hit, and the lockdowns gave me time to reflect on how much I really loved and missed doing hair.

I knew in my heart I loved teaching, too, but only when it was honest, inclusive and scientifically sound.

I’d taught alongside another stylist, Harriet, who shared my vision for education, and we started talking about the possibility of starting something new.’

In September 2020, Humankind Hair launched, and sold out every course in under 48 hours.

Now headed up by Anneliese and a team of like-minded educators, courses are available both on and offline, in the London academy, or nationally for salon teams.

We teach colouring, styling and trichology courses, both online and offline.

Everything we teach is adapted to suit every hair type, from straight to tightly curled.

All our courses are interwoven with elements of trichology - even colouring and styling courses will always relate back to the science behind each technique - ensuring they are scientifically sound and always factual.

Interactive, memorable, learning experiences are how we’d describe our course days. Because learning needs to be fun to be effective.

Our educators are passionate, personable and, so it’s been said, ‘just the right amount of crazy’.
We’re taking it as a compliment!

▪️If we’re teaching you a balayage, we’re teaching you how to adapt it to ALL hair types - not just on a level 7 white woman with straight/wavy hair.

Our courses are always inclusive.

▪️We make education accessible to ALL. Because taking a day out the salon costs way more than just the cost of the course itself.

We’re flexible, and cater education sessions to suit all budgets. Because everyone should have access to education.

▪️Rooted in science, our courses blend hairdressing with trichology, exploring the why’s behind the what’s of everything we teach. Because clients expect so much more these days.

Simple, effective, empowering.
