Our history?
Space Syntax was established on 17th July 1989 to apply the 'space syntax' approach in urban planning & design practice.
The 'space syntax' approach
Pioneered in the 1970s & 80s by Professors Bill Hillier, Julienne Hanson & Alan Penn at The Bartlett School of Architecture UCL, the 'space syntax' approach was conceived to help simulate the likely effects of urban planning & architectural design proposals on the people who occupied & moved around in them.

Projects | City & regional scale
Urban planning & design strategies that deliver sustainable spatial, land use & transport outcomes.
National, regional & urban masterplans.
Projects | Property developments
Place-based walking, cycling & public realm strategies.
Urban masterplanning, public space design & land value modelling.
Projects | Buildings & estates
User-efficient layout designs that drive organisational performance. Space planning & user flow design.
“I know that these techniques work from the tough environment of practice. I love the world of analysis, observation, of research, but also passion, imprecision, the hunch. Space Syntax is the testing of the interaction of these opposing worlds,” said Norman Foster, Founder & Executive chairman, Foster + Partners.

TRAINING | Ukraine
Throughout 2023, Space Syntax has been supporting the Ro3kvit: Urban Coalition for Ukraine by training a cohort of its members in the use of spatial analytic techniques. Our aim has been to provide Ro3kvit with a capability that can be used in the short term to support reconstruction of Ukraine's cities while also considering longer-term issues relating to health and economic productivity.

🚀 Today our post is dedicated to Space Syntax — an organization with over 30 years of global experience in the fields of architecture and urban planning. Their modeling tools forecast the social, economic, and environmental impacts of development on mobility, land value, and health. Space Syntax shapes policies, planning strategies, and design proposals that benefit people, property, and the environment. From individual buildings to entire cities, they shape compelling visions of a sustainable, liveable and healthy future.
For Ro3kvit: Urban Coalition for Ukraine Urban Coalition, Space Syntax provided access to their multi-session courses on Spatial Network Analysis. It allowed participants to learn how to use spatial data and GIS software to measure and visualize the properties of urban networks, such as connectivity, integration and choice. These properties can reveal how the spatial layout of places can be optimised to enhance human behavior, such as movement, interaction and perception.
Ed Parham, Director of Innovation and Design at Space Syntax, shares:
“We wanted to offer our support by helping develop the capabilities of an existing network of professionals who know their cities very well and can enable positive longer-term outcomes through their work. By providing training we offered access to knowledge and tools that explain how cities work, and which can then be applied to both re-building Ukraine’s cities while also considering 21st Century challenges such as climate change.”
Svitlana Usychenko, one of the coalition members who completed the courses, reflects:
“Space Syntax is an approach that combines scientific rigor with a focus on human behavior for the planning and design of buildings and urban areas. The training on the Space Syntax basics and GIS implications equipped the Ro3kvit team with the tool for the analysis of pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicle movement networks. It has seen application in our projects as an integration strategy for the waterfront of Ochakiv and the Dnipro River vision. Many thanks to the Space Syntax office for the opportunity to learn such a useful methodology for planning an improvement of connectivity and urban performance in the Ukrainian context.”
We are grateful to Space Syntax for their continuous and professional support to the Ro3kvit: Urban Coalition for Ukraine and Ukraine. Looking forward to the next collaborations! 🙌🏻

Bold, compassionate & data-driven: urban planning principles to deliver the UN SDGs
5th February at 18:30-20:30 GMT+8 online & in-person
Using case studies from international urban planning practice, MD Prof Tim Stonor will show how digital tools are helping cities address sustainability challenges through the creation of human-centred spatial development strategies. These tools range from GIS-based mapping of mobility patterns, and algorithm-based analysis of spatial connectivity, to AI techniques for ‘growing’ cities automatically.
Tools alone are not enough. What matters more are:
- first, the goals towards which the tools are directed: health, climate resilience and dignified shelter, and
- second, the urban planning principles with which the tools are applied: spatial connectivity, the creation of mixed-use urban centres, a focus on streets, slow-speed mobility, public transport and shade.
Taken together, these goals and principles define the ‘spatial culture’ of urban settlements, reflecting and shaping their histories, belief systems, climates, places of social encounter, places of commercial transaction and the ways in which they integrate with natural environments.
