Secret Rivals. They were last in the neighbourhood at last summer’s Glofest, where they delivered a storming set. This unplugged event is not their natural habitat, but they adapt supremely. Witty, unrehearsed on-stage banter between singer Ash and guitarist Jay changes the mood in the room abruptly. We hear ‘Neck’ and ‘Say Less’ from last year’s solid ‘Amor Fati’, the slightly bleak lyrics contrasting with a jaunty musical

SECRET RIVALS Secret Rivals can be variously fighty, fuzzy, jangly and delicate, all while sounding like they’ve spent the past three decades in their bedroom keeping a flame alive for the spirit of true indie pop. After their rather excellent ‘Ways’ EP back in March, they fluff back into view with a new song ‘Sideline’ that is very much on the sweet and jangly end of their musical spectrum. Over a simple guitar spangle co-vocalists Ash and Jay trade doe-eyed lines that could be a break-up song or a gentle bath in romantic nostalgia. It’s like a sunny day picnic gathering involving Heavenly, Huggy Bear, The Beautiful South and The Cure, each at their softest and silkiest. It’s all rather lovely if slightly melancholic and now we want a litter of slightly sad-looking kittens to play with
