SIZE MATTERS
This is the first of a series of short teaser films looking at the research and outcomes of Ella’s Master’s project.
This particular film shows some of the techniques and processes tested for gathering size information - from physical bespoke tailor’s dummy making, through digital remote measurement and creation of a digital dummy, to exporting this back into the physical realm with a super accurate 3d printed version of our house model.
Ambition: Right size first time = less waste all round.

Throwback to the beginning of March -
For her masters in pattern and garment technology, Ella built a bespoke avatar (digital dummy) based on 3d information of a real person (gathered using an app on their phone); in collaboration with the dancer she then designed the dress entirely digitally - directly on the bespoke avatar; producing digital flat patterns and sewing together the digital version of the dress on the avatar. The avatar was then linked to digital motion capture of the dancer in action (information gathered using one of those motion capture suits used for modern movies) and brought together in animation, lighting and rendering software - to both check the physical performance properties of the dress and show the dancer just what it would look like. A physical version of the dress was the made from the digital information and tested ‘in real life’. An extraordinary process for which Ella had to learn how to use many new bits of software - a process developed by Ella to prove the practically of remote bespoke manufacturing for her dancer clients in far flung corners of the world.
