Empowering engineers and their families to thrive for over 130 years. Please #DonateDirect today. Whatever their circumstances.

As an independent engineering charity, we have been empowering engineers and their families to thrive since 1890 - helping to ensure they never have to face life's challenges alone. We may be a small team, but we make a huge difference in the global engineering community. Throughout our long history, we've delivered vital services which support almost 1,000 people, every year. Whether it’s...

During , we’re recognising the importance of building carer-friendly communities. This means creating spaces where carers are understood, supported and empowered to thrive.

Every day, around 63 million people worldwide care for someone close to them. Many people don’t recognise themselves in those numbers, as they’re just doing what needs to be done.

If you have care responsibilities and a connection to the engineering community, Foothold may be able to support you.

Our latest blog contains free wellbeing resources for carers, plus info about the support we can offer eligible members of the community.

Lisa cared for her parents when they began suffering from health issues.

Her father was a proud lifelong engineer, and president of the Leeds Engineering Association. We were able to support the family with mobility equipment.

Today is Tourette’s Awareness Day.

Tourette’s is often misunderstood.

Many people still think it is mainly about random swearing, but that is one of the least common symptoms.

Tourette’s is a neurodivergent condition that causes tics; sudden, repeated movements or sounds that a person cannot fully control.

Tics can include blinking, facial movements, shoulder shrugs, head jerks, humming, sniffing, throat clearing, or repeating words and phrases.

They can change over time and may become stronger when someone is stressed, tired, overwhelmed, or trying hard to suppress them.

Tourette’s does not define someone’s personality, professionalism, or ability.

This Tourette’s Awareness Day, let’s move beyond stereotypes and support neurodivergent engineers to feel understood, supported, and valued.

Are you an engineer, or know someone who is? What would you, or they, do if one of the following major life events affected you?

Bereavement, unemployment, health issues, sudden caring duties for a loved one…

A sudden change of circumstances can turn our world upside down.

Foothold empowers engineers to take control of their situation and get their lives back on track, but we can’t do it without your support.

To those of you who have already donated to our ‘empower’ appeal, thank you.

If you haven’t donated yet, then please consider making a donation today.

Between 1 Jan and 31 March this year we made 136 grant payments to people who need it most - your donations are directly supporting engineers and their families every day!

Looking for a place to talk about work, life, or whatever's on your mind?

Today, we're launching the pilot of an online peer support programme.

We know that feeling connected to others is vital for our mental health. Yet many engineers tell us they feel isolated, whether that’s due to long working hours or adjusting to life changes such as bereavement or retirement.

Our new peer support programme hopes to help change that by offering a safe, welcoming space where people can talk openly and feel understood by others with shared experiences of engineering.

Peer support group meetings will be:
- Free
- Confidential
- Facilitated by trained Foothold volunteers
- Every 1-2 months, initially online

Interested in taking part? We'd love you to join us! Visit https://tinyurl.com/4hebck8c to learn more and register your interest.
