👆 Pain is an unbelievably complex topic and it is one that as a society we have a very skewed perception of. We tend to associate pain with structure and damage and often assume there is a linear relationship between the amount of pain we experience and the amount of damage there is, this is far from the case 📈.

🤏👐 Whether you've had pain for a short time or a long time there are a multitude of factors that affect the amount of pain we experience. Our attitudes and beliefs around pain, our confidence in dealing with pain, our thoughts, feelings and emotions not to mention any number of environmental factors like sleep, nutrition, exercise, finances and social isolation, the list goes on.

👍In recent years, particularly last year, it seems society is far more comfortable admitting, acknowledging and understanding that our physical health and our mental health are intrinsically linked, which is progress, but there still appears to be a big gulf in our acceptance that pain is also affected by more psychosocial factors. But it makes sense we're complex beings we thoughts, feelings and emotions, not just machines with tendons, bones and ligaments.

❗The term 'wear & tear' is synonymous with osteo/arthritis. In fact you may not have even been diagnosed with arthritis but diagnosed with 'wear & tear' ⠀

🧑‍⚕️ It may sound like semantics but the term 'wear & tear' paints this negative picture 🎨 of a degenerative joint that inevitably is going to get worse with time. ⠀
🦴 Just like the rest of our body, our joints are continually undergoing a process of healing and repair and this is no different if you have arthritis. ⠀

🤯 It may happen a tad slower as you get older, where you have periods of flare ups but your joint will be continually doing it's best to try and repair itself. ⠀

💪 There are a few things that can help to facilitate this like loading, exercise and weight loss but the message is just because you've been told you've got 'wear & tear' doesn't mean you're destined for subsequent years of worsening pain. ⠀

🦴 Your joint very rarely tears and it also has the ability to repair, particularly if you do a few things to help it along the way. So try and think of it more as WEAR & REPAIR, or wear, flare & repair rather than wear & tear 👍⠀

☝️ First up, the phrase that has been most popular so far - MOTION IS LOTION.

😀 It may sound like a seriously cheesy physio quote, which, it is! But there is a bit more to it than that.

🏃‍♂️ Motion, movement, exercise, physical activity, it doesn't matter what you call it, is absolutely vital to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

👨‍⚕️ It is something that we focus on a lot and often advise frequently as part of our treatment plans with patients for many musculoskeletal issues.
