Today marks 30 years since the first performance of Houseworks, a seminal immersive experience for the very young commissioned as part of Out of
How fitting that tonight we also have a Board meeting. A moment to celebrate with all our board but especially who in a beautiful full circle moment you will see in this video as part of our London 1996 cast.
People still talk to us about this show and the impact it made on them, and the children’s theatre landscape. In those 30 years since we’ve collaborated with a multitude of incredible artists, designers, dancers, puppeteers, technicians, puppet makers, stage managers, composers, producers, funders, board members and many more. Huge thanks to all of them. 👏👏👏👏👏❤️

Very proud that Sue Buckmaster receives a Special Award at the Fringe Theatre Awards tonight.
Sharing her message about the beauty and brilliance of making work with those artists found on the fringes and the importance of making Art for children. 👏👏👏❤️
“Adam Phillips says that adulthood is our recovery from childhood. Whether that be trying to heal the challenges we had or trying to re-cover the good feelings, I believe there is much truth to this.
So we should do the best we can to get the childhood bit right. Yes?
If so, why are the Arts being eliminated from school curriculums? Why are youth theatres closed? Why has it become increasingly difficult for venues to programme art for children? It makes no sense for the well-being of our young and it’s why I continue to do what I do.
I would like to thank Fringe Awards for this special award.
As I constantly experience, the best people and ideas are in the fringes. Exciting emerging artists, experienced artists who want to keep experimenting, older artists who finally want their authentic voice to be heard, experimental cross-art form and cross-cultural work which has not yet found its place and Puppetry, one of my specialisms which, by its very nature, cleverly hides in the shadows. And of course - children’s work. Often seen as simple or an after-thought.
There are very little awards given for these less recognised categories of expertise and so I receive this as a real treat, a little bit of glamour and recognition. I accept it on behalf of everyone who has been on this 30-year journey with Theatre-Rites, all ensuring the creation of great art experiences which always put children at the heart of it!
Making and protecting work for children takes care of the past - your childhood recovery. The present - current children’s self-worth AND the future- the adults they will become and the planet they need to take care of.
Here’s to Arts for Children and all those who care for them!
Thank you”

Another wonderful message sent after one of our shows
What an experience. It was so
beautiful and so cleverly put
together. H and I both really enjoyed
it.
H is almost 12 and came home and
shared the whole thing with his dad
in minute detail. He was blown away
by it (not that he’d ever admit it-
too cool for that ) but just the
enthusiasm of retelling and
recounting it – I think it will be a
memory that stays with him (and
me) for a long time.
🙏 ❤️

At the end of Return to The Forest audiences, cast and our participant performers join together in celebration. Its created many beautiful moments and conversations about the show - it’s been a gift to us. We’re also so grateful for those who’ve taken the time to write to us.
We know from many years of experience that you should never underestimate a young audience!
J (9) and his friend (10) all
understood the themes that were
coming through and we had some
really insightful conversations
coming out and on the way home.
So great and so important to have
opportunities to have these
conversations but introduced in a
fun, immersive and memorable way.
Thanks!
