🏙️ London Mayor Urges Government to Pause New Visa Rules 🇬🇧

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has called on the UK Government to rethink its new immigration rules, warning that they could put hundreds of Transport for London (TfL) workers at risk of losing their jobs. 🚇

The Transport Salaried Staffs’ Association (TSSA) revealed that nearly 300 TfL employees could face removal after the government raised the minimum salary threshold for visa sponsorship and removed key transport roles from the Skilled Worker Visa List.

Speaking to the London Assembly on 9 October, Mayor Khan said the policy changes have left many TfL staff “in limbo”, uncertain about their future in the UK.

The Deputy Mayor for Transport, Seb Dance, has already written to the Minister for Immigration, urging the government to pause the measures immediately and protect affected workers. ✉️

Meanwhile, the Home Office said it would respond “in due course,” adding that the government’s immigration white paper aims to “restore order” to the visa system and “reduce reliance on lower-skilled international recruitment.”

Immigration News Recap - United Kingdom

1. Starmer to end asylum ‘golden ticket’ of resettlement and family reunion rights

What happened: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that people granted asylum in the UK will no longer automatically have the right to bring family members (spouses, children) via family reunion. He said settlement and rights must be “earned.”

Why it matters: This is a significant tightening of asylum policy. It reduces one of the incentives for making asylum claims, and could impact many who arrive in the UK and rely on family support.
Implication: If someone is considering asylum as a route to stay, they should understand family reunion may no longer be guaranteed.

2. Britain plans tougher settlement rules for refugees

What happened: The UK government proposed more restrictive rules for refugees to gain permanent residency: longer residence requirement (from 5 to possibly 10 years), stricter conditions on contribution and behaviour

, and ending automatic family reunification.
Reuters

Why it matters: Refugees would face a tougher path to building a life in the UK. It signals that the UK is shifting toward stricter control even for legally recognized refugees.
Implication: People seeking refugee status should anticipate longer timelines and stricter conditions for long-term settlement.

3. Kemi Badenoch promises US-style crackdown on migrants / ‘Removals Force’ plan

What happened: At the Conservative Party conference, Kemi Badenoch unveiled a plan to create a UK “Removals Force” modeled after US ICE, aiming to deport 150,000 migrants per year, while also supporting removal of legal barriers in justice and human rights laws.

Why it matters: This is a highly aggressive enforcement proposal. It shows the Conservative Party is moving toward much stricter immigration enforcement if they gain or maintain power.
Implication: For your audience, this means increased risk for irregular migrants and possibly tighter compliance requirements. It’s a policy to watch.

4. NHS could cease to function under Labour’s new visa rules, say nurses

What happened: Labour’s proposed plan would extend the time foreign workers must stay (from 5 to 10 years) before getting indefinite leave to remain or accessing benefits. Health workers say this could cause staff shortages that cripple the NHS.
The Guardian

Why it matters: The UK health sector relies heavily on foreign staff. This policy could disincentivize skilled migrants from working in the UK, worsening healthcare capacity.
Implication: If your audience includes health professionals, this is directly relevant. They should pay attention to changes in visa and residency rules.

5. John Tuckett appointed as new ICIBI (Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration)

What happened: The UK Home Office appointed John Tuckett as the new Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration

Why it matters: The ICIBI is supposed to oversee and inspect the performance and fairness of UK border and immigration operations. A new appointment can signal shifts in how transparency and oversight will be handled.
Implication: Could lead to increases in reviews, audits, and possibly more accountability in how immigration cases are managed.

6. Statement of changes to the Immigration Rules: HC 1298 – September 2025

What happened: In September 2025, the UK government presented a formal document of changes to immigration rules (Statement of Changes HC 1298).
GOV.UK

Why it matters: These “Statement of Changes” often include adjustments to visa categories, eligibility, requirements, and procedural updates.
Implication: Anyone applying or planning to apply should review these changes — they may affect eligibility, required documentation, or processing steps.
