Work Hard, Have Fun, Make History, 2023
from the series We, Us.
If there has ever been a corporation that has both exploited and beguiled us, it’s Amazon. The company significantly impacts our planet in numerous detrimental ways and epitomizes wasteful corporate practices, environmental destruction, corporate greed, and arrogance.
Amazon plays a role in the severe damage caused by hyper-consumerism to our planet, generating emissions, toxic waste, and exploiting workers who often lack the right to unionize in most places.
We, Us.
A new series I am working on. There are currently two new works from this series being exhibited in the Leda and the Swan exhibition at Victoria Miro, on until 13th January 2024.
I once viewed our relationship with nature as a kind of battleground, a struggle between humans and the environment, us against it. My prior work, “Bastard Countryside,” developed over 15 years, explored this notion by challenging pastoral ideals within the UK’s edgelands and decaying industrial landscapes.
However, my perspective has transformed significantly. In light of the pressing need for action amid irrevocable climate change, it’s become evident that we must redefine this relationship. Nature isn’t a separate entity; it’s intrinsically linked to us. We are nature. Acknowledging the loss of our connection to nature is recognizing our own disconnection.
The new series, “We, Us,” amalgamates compelling visuals to convey vital messages about climate change, biodiversity, and the human footprint on the natural world. It also seeks to engage a younger audience, fostering awareness of environmental issues and the urgency of conservation.
By juxtaposing British wildlife against human-made landscapes, the project illustrates animals’ resilience and adaptability amidst urban decay, challenging our perceptions of our intricate connection with nature. This exploration symbolizes the collision between global capitalism and the natural world, compelling us to re-evaluate our bond with the land, nature, and ultimately, ourselves.
