Let’s talk about something we don’t talk about enough: loneliness after cancer.
For many people affected by cancer, the end of treatment isn’t the end of the struggle. The physical side effects can linger, but so can something less visible — isolation.
Loneliness is more than just a tough emotion. Research shows it’s linked to poorer immune function, increased fatigue, pain, depression, sleep disturbances, and even a higher risk of cancer recurrence. And yet, it’s something many people feel they shouldn’t talk about — especially when they’re expected to feel "grateful" that treatment is over.
At PINC & STEEL, we believe no one should face recovery alone. That’s why our programmes are built around connection. Whether it’s chatting with others in a rehab class, or simply having a physio who takes the time to check in — these moments of connection matter.
We want to break the stigma around loneliness and mental health. And we want to be part of a future where it’s completely normal for health professionals to ask, “How’s your heart, your mind, your spirit — not just your body?”
Because cancer rehabilitation is about more than regaining strength — it’s about restoring confidence, hope, and connection.

We define chronic cancer as cancer which can be controlled for many (5+) years either through treatment or ‘watch and wait’. This typically includes chronic blood cancers (chronic myeloid leukaemia, myeloma) but can also includes melanoma, some types of ovarian cancer, and even brain tumours.
We know that living with a chronic cancer can be tough because they’re not well understood. People may ask you when you’re finishing treatment, why you haven’t lost your hair, or not understand how living with cancer can affect your energy levels.
We run chronic cancer chats monthly online and we’d love to see you there. The chats are informal and a good way to meet others who truly get what you’re going through.

New Evidence Reinforces the Power of Exercise in Cancer Recovery
A comprehensive new review published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine confirms what many in our field have long observed: exercise is a powerful tool in mitigating the side effects of cancer treatment.
The study analysed 485 outcomes from 80 moderate- to high-quality trials and found that physical activity—including aerobic and resistance exercise, high-intensity interval training, tai chi, and yoga—can significantly reduce heart and nerve damage, brain fog, breathlessness, and more. It also improved body composition, inflammatory markers, psychological wellbeing, sleep quality, and overall quality of life.

These are the words of Athens medical doctor Eirini Kyriakoulakou, the first researcher to take part in a new fellowship exchange programme funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation through its Global Health Initiative.
Eirini embraced the opportunity to spend time learning about Active Together Yorkshire, a pioneering programme that is helping hundreds of people with cancer in Yorkshire prepare for and recover from cancer by providing physical activity, nutritional and psychological support.

Can you help?
This study is recruiting women with breast cancer who have been prescribed hormone therapy (e.g. tamoxifen, anastrozole, letrozole, exemestane) in the past 24 months, and is aiming to determine the best type of support to help women take their hormone therapy. Women who take part may receive up to four different types of support. The study is hosted by the University of Leeds and funded by the National Institute of Health Research.
