"The highlight of ‘Every Revolution’ was the characters’ performances. The ensemble cast was stellar, with nobody outshining the other .... I find it deeply inspiring that these bright young talented women came up with a script which was engaging and of high calibre in voicing feminist concerns which are often left trivialized or unheard."

‘Every Revolution’ Review I had little inkling about the play ‘Every Revolution’; all I knew from the flyers placed strategically on the tables in the waiting area was that it might be racy, what with the Polaroid snapshot …

Who is an influential woman in your life?
“There have been so many influential women in my life, this is quite hard to answer! My Mama and the women in my family have shown me that it is worth speaking up- even if that means you might come across as bossy and a bit annoying- I’ve always known that I am allowed to have an opinion and have learnt from the ladies in my family not to shy away from that.
My wonderful friends, especially the ladies, have influenced me to be so supportive of each other. We celebrate each other’s victories and help each other out when we aren’t feeling very strong and giving a shoulder to lean on when we need it.
My sister reminds me to believe in myself and others and to have courage and be kind, even when you’d rather just have a good moan about life.”

Introducing the women of the revolution!
Lauren Elcock: costume designer.
What's something you love about yourself?
"Something I love about myself… something I love about myself? It’s tricky isn’t it because nobody likes talking about themselves. But maybe, in a way, that’s ironically what I’m starting to like about me– is that now, I’m beginning to actually do that with more ease. I think as teenagers we all go through battles with our own self-confidence; especially with the typical “popularity” contests at school and the constant body pressures that we face. For many other personal reasons, which are actually bought to light in this play, those feelings of self-doubt were completely maximized during my young-adult life. It’s only really been within this past year that I’ve begun to learn to like myself again and be proud of exactly who “Lauren Elcock” is. As cheesy as it sounds, I think that it’s absolutely vital for everyone to reach a point where they can recognize that perfection is impossible and become really comfortable in their own, imperfect, skin. Whether you’re female, male, transgender, non-binary or which ever other gender, or not; to be happy with who you are and confident in the knowledge that you are exactly who you want to be, I believe, is the most empowering thing of all."

What does Every Revolution mean to you?
"If I look back at the time that we’ve spent working on Every Revolution it’s been a really unique experience and one that I’ll definitely remember. Women are often taught to shrink and not take up to much room. Projects like this reiterate that it’s okay to have an opinion and that you should fu***ng own it.
Working in a group of fifteen women has been both magical and challenging. What it has illustrated though, is that there is value in communication– everyone in the group has a different experience, as well as all the other people who aren’t even part of the project. It’s essential that we listen to all voices and educate ourselves on how to work together not against each other. Indeed, that feminism goes beyond just our experiences as a group of fifteen white women - Its blossom should benefit everyone."
The revolution needs you.
The revolution is coming.

What does feminism mean to you?
"Feminism to me means equality for everyone, it isn't just about building women up, it's about realising our strength."

Who is an influential woman in your life?
“It’s kinda cliché, but it’d have to be my best friend from back home, Sarah. She’s had a hard time of it, not going into details, but watching her cope and watching her family work with each other to get through all the things that come up in their life, it’s just so amazing. Life has thrown her so many curveballs, and she just keeps hitting them right back, she’s such an amazing woman, and it’s crazy because I don’t think she realises just how strong and influential she is. And she is always there for me, like, I could be upset about something so insignificant, but I’ll text her about it, and she’ll always reply, and say ‘Let’s go for a walk, let’s clear our heads and talk about it’, she’s just always supportive. She is the perfect example of how women can empower other women, because I always feel better after talking to her, and I hope she feels the same about me too. Her friendship means so much to me, and it’s crazy because we met in year 7 or 8 in middle school, and yeah, we were friends, then we went to high school and we kinda drifted apart, she was the pretty popular girl, not like that’s a bad thing, and I was a bit of an inbetweener, but then we went to college with each other and we said ‘f**k it’ to the whole concept of popularity and cliques, and we liked each other for who we were, and there was nothing else to it. We grew up and matured, I guess. In year 7, I would never have known that the pretty blonde American girl who had just moved to England would become such a huge part of my life, and now, nearly 10 years later, here we are. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
