Gosfield Lake Golf Course was this year’s venue for our President’s Lunch. The food and company was great. President Howard thanked club members for their hard work and support and then presented membership badges to our two new members, Paul and Wendy.

Today marks the start of , where we acknowledge the power of safe vaccines in protecting people around the world from deadly diseases.

Since Rotary International launched the campaign to eradicate polio, we have helped vaccinate close to 3 billion children.

Those vaccines have prevented 20 million cases of paralysis, and given people a future they otherwise wouldn't have had.

Prior to vaccines, people who contracted polio were not so lucky. In this article, the World Health Organization (WHO) tells the personal story of Éliane Fuseau, who contracted polio as a young child in 1950s France - before vaccines were widely available. Her experience illustrates how devastating the disease is for individuals and families.

It is with deep concern we have heard that the UK government has decided to withdraw its financial support for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI).

We are at a critical stage in the campaign to eradicate polio. Loss of financial support for the eradication campaign could have dire consequences.

Rotary International pioneered the campaign to eradicate polio. Our members have given huge amounts of financial, volunteering and advocacy support to this endeavour, and we remain fully committed to the task of eradicating polio as our organisation’s number one humanitarian goal.

On Sunday afternoon we headed to the banks of the River Brain for our latest litter pick. Along with the usual haul of bottles—both plastic and glass—tin cans, and even a few footballs, we also came across an old canoe and a child's bike. It was a very productive afternoon, and everyone did a fantastic job. Well done, Braintree Rivers!
