Garforth Townswomens Guild
Townswomen’s Guilds is one of the UK’s leading women’s organisations, providing fun, friendship and a forum for social change since 1929.
Garforth TG celebrated its 50th Anniversary in July 2016. We meet in the Welfare Hall, Main Street on the second Thursday of each month from 1.30 - 3.30pm, when we enjoy talks and demonstrations (not to mention tea and biscuits!)
There are also smaller sections, for example the Arts & Crafts Group, Bowling Section, Walking Group and Social Group who meet at different times and in different places. Please text or email for further details. We have meals out and outings to look forward to and the occasional party. Recently we took part in "Townswomen's Guild Does Comic Relief". As the name suggests, we joined in fundraising by making and selling "comic critters". We hold two Fairs (Summer and Christmas) in the Welfare Hall to raise funds and generally have some fun. We also come together with other Guilds for Local and National Events. We are always happy to welcome new members and hear new ideas. Please contact us if you require any further information.

I might occasionally dip into the past to jog our memories 😃

Today our Strollers went to St Aidan's Nature Reserve for a short stroll around the lakes, followed by a cuppa in the Little Owl Cafe. We were disappointed not to see the Osprey who has been sighted recently but enjoyed our walk and chat in the sunshine.
At last week's Guild meeting our speaker was Mr Maurice Norman. I'm sure he won't mind my saying he is a Centenarian. He set up his power point presentation and proceeded to talk for over an hour about his life - and this was only Part 1. He was so interesting and everyone could hear him really well. We look forward to hearing Part 2.

Who was Maud Hummerston?
She was our first female librarian! She worked at Armley Library in 1912 as ‘Chief Storyteller’ where she read books to children, beginning our now beloved story and rhyme sessions.
She has now been rightly celebrated as part of the ground floor refurbishment at Leeds Central Library, with a beautiful new events space named after her: The Hummerston Suite. It can be booked for use by organisations and community groups.
To mark the occasion, and celebrate Leeds 400, our children's team have created a special one-off edition of her publication "Chimney Corner" which you'll find on our Secret Library blog - link in comments 👇

Hottest day EVER!!!
However, we enjoyed our annual excursion.
Firstly, we went to Elsecar Heritage Centre .
Then back on the coach to Whitby's Fish and Chip Restaurant at Rotherham. Delicious!!
Our final stop was over the road at Boundary Mills where we had a mooch around the retail area and then into the cafe. Tea and chat is always the most popular part!!
We were delighted to be joined at Whitby's by our friends from Bramley Townswomen's Guild - Marilyn, Margaret and Diana.
Always a pleasure to see them and we promised to arrange a visit to them in the not-too-distant future.
As usual I forgot photos apart from this one on the coach 🙄
I've pinched Marilyn's nice photo 👍😃
Heartfelt thanks to Linda for arranging the outing and ensuring all went smoothly.
Also thank you to Leap Travel who looked after us very well xx
Looking forward to our September Guild meeting.

How do you float? 🌊
If you fall into deep water, your instinct may be to panic — but that can be dangerous. Instead, remember the RNLI’s Float to Live advice:
✅ Tilt your head back with your ears submerged to keep your airway clear
✅ Relax and control your breathing to overcome cold shock
✅ Gently move your hands and legs to help you stay afloat
✅ Don’t worry if your legs sink - everyone floats differently
Stay calm, stay afloat, and give yourself the best chance to stay safe.
