Driving consists of multiple skills. What would you say is the most important skill of all?

A close call for a fellow instructor and their student today. It must have really shaken them up.

Thankfully in this example the instructor reacted very quickly to prevent an accident but what was the driver of the black car thinking?!

This is a great demonstration of the importance of hazard awareness when on the road and shows just how quickly things can change.

My student failed their mock test today. Most people will see why but if you aren’t sure please read on…

Passing on the left (often called “undertaking”) is generally discouraged and can be considered careless or dangerous driving in the UK, but it is not strictly illegal in all situations.

There are specific, legal exceptions where you can pass a vehicle on the left:

* In slow-moving traffic: If the traffic is heavily congested and lanes of traffic are moving slowly in queues, you can keep up with the traffic in your left-hand lane even if it means passing the cars on your right.

* When a vehicle in front is turning right: You can pass on the left if there is space and the vehicle ahead has clearly signaled to turn right, or if you are waiting to enter a side road.

* On multi-lane one-way streets: Drivers may pass vehicles on either side, provided road markings and traffic conditions allow.

There’s no minimum number of lessons you must have or hours you must practise driving before sitting a driving test in the uk. Thankfully, most people take some form of formal training before attempting the driving test, but there are lots of people who don’t or who take the test against their instructor’s advice. With pass rates currently under 50%, do you think there should be a set minimum number of hours training before someone can take their test?

Lots of drivers will see the road is clear and not completely stop at a stop line. Under Rule 171 of the UK Highway Code, you MUST stop behind the line at a junction with a ‘Stop’ sign and a solid white line across the road. Because this rule contains the word “MUST”, it is a legal requirement supported by legislation. Failing to stop completely is a traffic offense and could result in a fine.

This will split opinions….I’ll never understand this. Why do so many drivers feel it’s necessary to use a merger for such pointless last second overtakes like this? This person felt it necessary to get past only then to have to put the brakes on because it meant they then got too close to the car ahead. Mergers are not overtaking lanes they are to filter traffic back into one lane.

I often hear words my younger students use and wonder what they mean. It makes me feel old. Would the term roadman apply here? 😂
