What types of tasks are volunteers likely to do?
Volunteers will be required to deliver a range of services to families visiting their loved one in prison. These services range from checking visitors in upon their arrival, playing with visiting children, talking to new prisoners during their induction programme to serving visitors behind our tea bar situated within the visiting hall. Volunteers will also help with monitoring and evaluation of services, research, awareness raising and the development of further services.
Why does Choices Consultancy Service recruit volunteers?
Although using volunteers is obviously cost effective, there are many other reasons why we prefer to have volunteers in our team:
Our volunteers come from an array of different backgrounds therefore we are truly representing the community in our delivery. Using volunteers ensures us that the community is having a stake in our decision making, moulding and overall development and delivery of services.
Using volunteers also aids us to look at gaps in the system and develop further projects.
As volunteers are there because they ‘want’ to and not because they ‘have’ to, they are providing our clients with a more personal touch which has been recognised and commented on.
The diversity of volunteers brings a unique quality to our organisation which helps keep us grounded yet fluid.
Using volunteers helps us to raise awareness of our work and our clients needs.
Where do volunteers fit into Choices Consultancy Service?
Choices is a not-for-profit voluntary run organisation. Our staffing levels are minimal whilst our volunteer input is very large. Volunteers are integral to our success. All our services are developed and delivered by volunteers. Our volunteers work on many different levels, covering an array of services. Our volunteers range from the age of 18–88 and come from many different backgrounds. All volunteers are fully trained and security cleared prior to taking up their post.
