This has been a sobering little exercise to say the least. And is illustration of a retail industry that is in severe decline and ultimately unsustainable. Using way back machine to check our 2015 prices (shown in the first column) and the Bank of Englands inflation calculator we’ve calculated what certain products we sell should be allowing for inflation (the second column). The third column shows Progrow’s actual price in 2025 and the fourth column shows the difference between the Bank of Englands inflation calculated price and our actual price now. As you can see we are selling every product listed below its projected inflation cost, some substantially. The irony is some customer still think we charge too much! This is against the backdrop of your average energy bill rising 36% in ten years from £450 - £769. Your average supermarket shop rising 25% in the last two years. Petrol increasing 27.5% in the last ten years. And more closer to home our own rent increasing 15% last year, sage support increasing 20% in a year the list goes on.
Our web sales are currently down 67% on last year which was a very poor year anyway, so even at these prices things generally aren’t selling. Certainly an industry in severe decline and one it makes little sense to operate in going forward.

A worthy post for the humble Aqua Tray. Back in stock at both shops and online. These cheap versatile trays have been utilised by slab growers for decades. They very conveniently pair with another Hydroponic staple the Bato 6.5ltr pot. Providing a simple solution to drainage in dripper systems using coco substrate. To Alleviate traffic flow in and around Progrow Exeter, Devon County Council have provided our own Railway station….. Simply pay a fortunate at any train station in the country and you can then disembark about 200m from Our Exeter store. Two years in the making when up and running Great Western Railway service will provide an hourly service. All in line with Devon’s Meteo ambitions whatever that is. In other news it was announced last week the council have given up on Devon’s roads and will let them go into (further) decline. We have always been happy to deliver locally for those unable to travel to the shops. And of course there’s always the convenience of ordering all our products online. .ag
