15/06/2026

A recent childcare case has raised important questions about safeguarding, recruitment processes, and whether background screening goes far enough.

For organisations working with children, Enhanced DBS checks and Barred List checks play a vital role in safer recruitment. But it's equally important to understand their limitations, the role of the DBS Update Service, and why many providers choose to adopt ongoing rechecking policies.

Last week, the teams at uCheck and TrustID came together for our Summer Social ☀️

It was a great chance to step away from the day-to-day, catch up in person, and celebrate the work happening across both teams.

From DBS and Right to Work checks to digital identity solutions, we’re all focused on helping organisations stay compliant and confident in their screening processes, so it was brilliant to spend some time together.

A big thank you to everyone who made it such a great afternoon.

Here’s to strong teams and a busy summer ahead 👋

Waiting on a DBS check and wondering what’s actually happening?

Most people don’t realise a DBS application moves through five separate stages before a certificate is issued.

From validation and Police National Computer checks to local police record searches and final printing, each step plays a part in safeguarding and compliance.

If you’ve ever asked:

🟡 What stage is my DBS at?
🟡 Why is it stuck at Stage 4?
🟡 What does “In Progress” really mean?
🟡 How do I track my application?

We’ve broken it all down in a simple guide.

Self-employed and need an Enhanced DBS check for your work?

Since January 2026, self-employed workers and personal employees can now apply for their own Enhanced DBS checks through a registered umbrella body like uCheck.

Previously, accessing higher-level DBS checks wasn’t straightforward if you didn’t have an employer to sponsor the application.

Now, eligible professionals working directly with families or private clients, such as tutors, carers, personal assistants and sole traders, have a clearer route.

If your role meets DBS eligibility criteria, you can apply digitally, with secure online ID verification and no paperwork.

Not sure if you qualify? Our team can guide you through it.

Do you know how uCheck started?

We began as a small family business with one clear goal, to help organisations make safer recruitment decisions.

Since then, we’ve grown into one of the UK’s leading employment screening providers. In 2022, we joined The Citation Group, investing nearly £1m into our technology. In 2023, we integrated with Disclosure Services to build an even stronger uCheck.

Today, we support over 80,000 organisations across the UK, providing DBS, Right to Work, Adverse Credit and Identity checks, including Enhanced, Standard, Basic, Volunteer and Individual DBS checks.

From small beginnings to a trusted screening partner for thousands, and we’re just getting started.
