Lately, I’ve been really inspired to pick up this acoustic and write songs.

Songwriting is often quite a therapeutic, instinctive and/or puzzle-solving process. Sometimes I can be cycling chord sequences round for days until I come up with the next part by accident, sometimes I know where it’s going before I’ve played the notes. Sometimes I have words, sometimes I have a melody of mumbly nonsense and sometimes I need to figure out what I’m trying to say before I can progress. But whatever it is, it often helps me process things going on in life or set that stuff aside and be in a moment on my own.

I’ve got quite a few songs that I’m looking forward to recording now and hope to share some of them soon enough!

The more I use my Sphere DLX microphone, the more I appreciate what a useful, great-sounding and fun mic it is to use. It’s a modelling mic, which means I can select from a large number of different microphone profiles modelled on real microphones including rare and vintage tube mics, expensive ribbon mics and even the trusty Shure SM57 among others.

The ability to choose between microphone models after recording came in particularly useful following a recent recording session as it allowed me to achieve the exact tonal characteristics I wanted for each of the instrumental tunes recorded. Some of the instrumentals called for a more vintage character, so being able to audition between vintage microphones like a .berlin U47 tube mic and an RCA 77 ribbon was fantastic. Pairing that with UA’s unison pre-amps, vintage compressors, EQs, reverbs and analogue tape emulation plug-ins further enhanced the feel I was going for and made the whole process from tracking to mixing so fun and inspiring!

A good chance to try out a variety of mic positions. The Apollo x8p and Sphere DLX microphone always impress me with their versatility and allow me to be creative by selecting from a range of modelled preamps and microphones.

I’ve been performing with musicians for over 20 years and mixing artists on stage and recording in the studio for almost as long.

My composition, sound design & audio mixing work with independent filmmakers has contributed to achieving film contest placements and securing placements for international film festivals.

My songwriting has been featured on BBCintroducing as Song Of The Week and has been played on commercial radio stations.
