💰 Beneath the gold, there’s a city built on bones and waste.
You might head to the Museum on the Mound in Edinburgh to stare at that famous, glimmering £1 million display. It’s a classic photo op—the kind that makes you dream about what you’d do with a fortune.
But if you look out the window of that prestigious bank building, you’re staring at a history that’s significantly darker than the banknotes inside.
Here is the side of The Mound they usually skip in the brochures:
💩A Foundation of Filth:
The "Mound" isn't a natural hill. It’s a man-made bridge created by dumping millions of cartloads of city rubble, excavation waste, and—let’s be honest—human filth into the old Nor’ Loch. The bank is literally perched on top of centuries of Edinburgh’s subterranean misery.
😱The "Unlimited" Nightmare:
Before modern safety nets, Scottish banking was a bloodsport. In the 1800s, "unlimited liability" meant that if your bank failed, you didn't just lose your savings; you lost your house, your clothes, and your life. The collapse of the City of Glasgow Bank saw entire families reduced to the workhouse overnight.
💰🪖Bank Wars:
Long before high-frequency trading, banks were running "bank wars." Rival institutions would aggressively hoover up each other's notes to force a sudden, coordinated run on gold reserves—a cutthroat game of financial chicken that often left ordinary people with worthless paper in their pockets.
👥The Shadow of the Loch:
You’re mere meters from where the Nor’ Loch once sat—the city’s open sewer, a site of public executions, and a dumping ground for the unwanted. The transition from that dark, murky past to the pristine, marble-floored world of modern finance is a haunting reminder of how much this city has buried.
Is it worth visiting?
Absolutely 👍
🏛️ It’s free, it’s fascinating, and it’s a brilliant way to see how we went from literal trash to cold, hard cash.
Just remember:
When you walk up the steps, you're walking on layers of the city's deepest secrets.
