Metamorphoses are an exciting trio, formed in 2016 by Jean Johnson (clarinet), Roeland Jagers (viola) and Ilona Timchenko (piano). Immediately they received invitations from The Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Spain. Although the basis for this trio is obviously Mozart’s Kegelstatt Trio, the trio are also strong advocates of contemporary music and this year will see the commission of a new work, written for them specially.

Metamorphoses couldn't believe our luck when agreed to write this incredible piece for us called "Out of Order", a highly imaginative work in six short evocative movements. Here is a snapshot from the dreamy Mvt III "As the Flow Cries".

A moment from Carl Reinecke Trio Op. 264, a lush romantic work first published in 1903. Played here by Carl Reinecke studied with Schumann, Mendelssohn, and Liszt. As a professor himself in Leipzig, he taught Grieg, Bruch, and Janacek among many others. This Op. 264 is full of attractive melodies and storytelling. Whilst Mikhail is very clever, rest assured he is not actually bowing with his left hand. The camera has mysteriously flipped the image!
Metamorphoses commissioned our friend, the late Christian James Elliott for this sensitive reimagining of the Adagio to Second Symphony. It is a “Rhapsody”, and rather than aiming to be a literal arrangement, it combines aspects of the score with an expanded sense of freedom, including jazz harmonies and improvisatory-like filigree, even giving the opening soaring melody to the sensuous viola with the clarinet taking over later.
