It is with great sadness that we share the passing of a much-loved member of our market family, Nancy Weeks, who passed away yesterday, Sunday 12th April, aged 101.

Nancy was truly one of a kind. Last year, she even received a special card from King Charles III & Queen Camilla to mark her 100th birthday — a moment we were all so proud to see her enjoy. These memories remain vivid as we reflect on her remarkable life.

Nancy’s connection to Durham Markets spanned over 40 years, woven into the fabric of our Market Hall and Market Place. She worked at many stalls, from hardware and antiques to sweets, makeup, and wool, always bringing warmth, wit, and energy.

Many will fondly remember Nancy from her 20 years working with Sandra at Homemade by Sandra on the outdoor market, where she worked until the incredible age of 95 - a true testament to her spirit and work ethic. Never one to sit still for long, Nancy was always on the go; we’re still not quite sure where she found the energy!

Nancy wasn’t just part of the market—the market shaped her life story. It was here, some 30 years ago, that she met her beloved Bill, who ran the old record stall. A true market love story.

She was a real character, loved by traders and customers alike. Her sense of humour was legendary. Sandra fondly remembers one time when a customer asked if the cakes were fresh. Nancy replied, “Let’s put it this way, they’re fresher than you, pet!” That line perfectly captures her quick wit and charm.

Nancy also took great pride in the people around her. For example, Claire Leckenby recalls how Nancy would always talk about Claire’s achievements, proudly telling others when Claire gained a BA Honours degree. This is a small but powerful reflection of just how much Nancy cared for those she worked alongside.

She was always smartly dressed, with her hair and makeup done, carrying herself with the same pride she showed in others. Nancy would do anything for anyone. She was a brilliant friend, a mother figure to her beloved niece Thelma, and a deeply loved partner to Bill. Throughout her life, Nancy's youthful spirit, kindness, and warmth touched many, making her simply a joy to be around.

We feel incredibly lucky and blessed to have known Nancy, and she will be missed beyond words by everyone here at Durham Markets.

Rest in peace, Nancy - you will always have a piece of our hearts 🤍
