It took us a couple of days to recover from Friday’s Sardinian dinner.
It was a great night spent with special people and for me it was a really moving experience.

I am always so proud to be able to share the flavours of my homeland and to tell you a little about my Sardinia, the island of centenarians.

Thank you to all the participants and to for hosting us.

When we began this journey 10 years ago, the aim was obviously to teach the Italian language.
What we’ve discovered is that, little by little, a small community has formed of people passionate not only about the language but also about Italian culture, history and, of course, food.

On Friday we celebrated 10 years of When in Rome and of this wonderful community.
It was a great way to mark this birthday, enjoying Sardinian specialities and toasting with some fine mirto.

It’s not over yet, and When in Rome will be organising other celebrations in the coming months.
Stay tuned.

In bonora! ( Goodbye in Sardinian)✨🙏🏽

🇮🇹✨ 10 YEARS OF US! ✨🇮🇹

Tonight we’re celebrating in style!

Our Italian language school is turning 10, and we’re celebrating a decade dedicated to promoting the Italian language and culture.

A journey made possible thanks to our passion and the enthusiasm of the many students who have filled our classrooms over the years.

We couldn’t have chosen a better way to celebrate than by gathering round the table together !

A journey through the authentic flavours of a wonderful land, Sardinia, perfect for toasting a decade of lessons, laughter, friendships and so much shared Italian culture.

Thank you to all the students and friends who have been part of this wonderful journey.

And to those that are booked for tonight’s event, please, bring your best smile (and a big appetite)!

See you tonight! 🥂
A sì biri 🥳

The 25th of April: A Day of Freedom and Flowers
In Italy!
The 25th of April (il Venticinque Aprile) is much more than a date on the calendar; it is the heartbeat of the modern Republic.
Known as Liberation Day (La Festa della Liberazione), it marks the spring of 1945 when the country rose up to end the N**i occupation and the Fascist regime.
It is a day that smells of wild poppies, grilled meats, and the historical weight of freedom.

“Il fascismo non è un opinione ma è un crimine!”
Giacomo Matteotti

Ciao a tutte/i 🤗
How was your Easter?
Did you know that the tradition of hiding surprises inside chocolate eggs is said to have originated in Turin in the 1700s, and to this day Italian Easter Eggs tend to be ENORMOUS with toys or gifts inside.
Did you find anything interesting inside your “Uova di Pasqua” 🐣?

We had a sunny Easter (and, miraculously, a sunny Easter Monday too) in Sardinia. The company was excellent, as was the food, followed by some lovely walks in the countryside and by the sea.

Now we’re all ready to get back to learning Italian, and this could be an egg-cellent opportunity for you to start learning Italian.
We have classes for all levels or we could tailor a one-to-one course for you!
Get in touch with us, we’d be delighted to help.

Meet Sinead…🤓🇮🇹✨
Sinead is a student in the beginner’s class.
She is such an enthusiastic Italian student and she’s a real team player within the class 💚🥳.
She has a wonderful sense of humour and is very self-deprecating – qualities that are essential when learning a foreign language as an adult.
I have to admit that I have the best students 🥰.
A big round of applause goes to all the Beginners students at (Lauren, Nilda, Sinead, Sharon, Alicia, Teresa, Stephanie, Helen, Roisin, Brigeen, Ronan)who come to class in the evening after a long day at work or school!
Beginners is the hardest part of a language journey. Keep it up 💪🏽🇮🇹🤓.
Bravissimi tutti / Well done everyone!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Brava / Congratulations to Sinead who won the Kahoot quiz in class, the last one before the Easter break.
Buona Pasqua 🐣🇮🇹.

Thanks to from , who immediately embraced the idea of an Italian quiz, and to her staff, who made the event unforgettable.
Thank you to my wonderful students who always support us in these crazy projects.
Thanks also to our friends and future students who had a great time last night and raised a glass with us.
Thank you to .logue.98 who created the quiz and Colm who hosted it.
Above all, thank you to the woman who, 10 years ago, put her trust in me and gave me a place to start all this, the Women centre. Grazie Margaret 💜!

🍕 Pizza is undoubtedly one of the most loved dishes in the world!
🤔And did you know that Pizza is the most Googled Italian word?
🏆The art of pizza making was officially recognised as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2017.
Since 2018 World Pizza Day has been celebrated on 17th January.
When In Rome returns with The Italian Kitchen in February which this year features
*drumroll please 🥁*

PIZZA and its various versions, including the one in the photo:
Pizzetta al taglio!

Its origins are in Rome, but it seems that the first traces of pizza al taglio date back to the time of Virgil, the poet who wrote the Aeneid.

👩🏻‍🍳 Pizza by the slice is cooked in large rectangular trays and cut into portions. It is perfect for those who want a quick but substantial meal or even for those who are walking through the streets of the city and suddenly feel a rumbling in their stomach.
This format allows you to try different flavours at the same time: margherita, ham and mushrooms, vegetables, diavola...
But we’ll talk more about this in class.
Stay tuned!

Two weeks have passed since this unforgettable gastronomic tour.
Bologna is undoubtedly one of the most important cities in terms of cuisine.
It is the home of tortellini, lasagne, mortadella and, above all, tagliatelle al ragù, one of the most misunderstood dishes in the world.
My ears prick up when I hear it referred to, sometimes with a certain passion, as ‘spaghetti Bolognes’, and I always try, at least in class, to explain that the latter is a dish that does not exist and that people should try the original, with tagliatelle of course, but above all without cream or mushrooms 😱, otherwise you risk ending up in Dante’s most fiery circle, alongside those who drink cappuccino for lunch or put pineapple on their pizza 👿.
Before setting off on this trip, I knew that Bologna would win over my palate.
However, I didn’t know that Verona would take the crown for the best risotto in the world:
risotto all’Amarone! 🏆🥇💜
‘No vabbè’, I have no words to describe this exquisite delicacy other than that it is STELLAR✨!
Try it to believe it.
Buon appetito💫.
