The Vision and Drive Behind Royal Roar

Every independent project has a driving force that operates away from the spotlight: the organizer, the connector, and the architect who keeps the machinery moving.
Royal Roar is shaped by that kind of presence: Georgios Chararis, a figure whose life is defined by a unique fusion of underground music culture and a sharp, self-made entrepreneurial spirit.

Early Life and Roots

Georgios Chararis was born in Athens and raised in Piraeus, an environment defined by its port-city energy, dense neighborhood life, and strong working identity.
His family origins come from Filiatra in the wider region of Messinia, a connection that grounded him culturally and remained an important reference point throughout his life.
This dual influence, the urban grit of Piraeus and the regional Messinian heritage, formed a personality equally comfortable with community-driven creativity and the practical demands of the professional world.

From Technical Roots to Entrepreneurship

Chararis’s professional foundation began with technical discipline. He trained in electrology and electrical installation, gaining a deep understanding of infrastructure and real-world problem-solving. However, his path took a decisive turn following his marketing studies.
Rather than pursuing a career in technical installation, he pivoted into the world of commerce. Leveraging his technical knowledge and strategic mindset, he became a successful salesman and eventually achieved the goal of running his own business. This transition from the guy who builds the system to the guy who leads the venture reflects the same adaptability he brings to his music.

The Roots of the Underground:

Founding and Evolution

Chararis’s journey into the Greek heavy metal scene began at just 13 to 14 years old, forming small bands with friends.
These early years were spent sharing rehearsal spaces with peers who went on to lead the scene, such as Kostas Alexakis (now of Kinetic and Acid Death).
By age 16 to 17, these efforts led to projects like Aquo Animé (Power Heavy Metal) and Maggoty (Thrash/Speed Metal), both of which served as the crucible for his musical identity.

The Angel Drop Era

In 1998, Chararis co-founded Angel Drop alongside bassist Vangelis Papitsis. The band became a significant name in the late-90s Greek underground.

* The Path of Blame: They released their first promo tape, The Path of Blame, followed by a second self-titled demo featuring the landmark song "Angel Drop".

* The Transition: Stavropoulos eventually moved to lead vocals, leading Angel Drop through numerous live gigs across the Athens circuit

* Line-up Evolution: When Papitsis left for his mandatory service in the Greek Army, the line-up evolved with John Volakakis on drums, George Stavropoulos on bass, and John Fasoulakis on lead guitar. Seasonal members like Sarantis on keyboards and Sundy Panagakoy in vocals also contributed to the sound.
The band benefited from seasonal members like Panos Iliou (Guitars & Vocals), who later established himself as a prominent jazz and blues guitarist with international studies and acclaimed solo work (Isolation).

Iconic Collaborations: The eponymous track "Angel Drop" features the guest vocals of Vaggelis Panagopoulos, known for his stellar career with Hourglass (Sands of Eternity) and his later work with the widely popular in Greece 48 Ores band.

The Strikelight Era: National and International Reach (2000–2008)

Following their work in the project Dia Pyros & Sidirou, Chararis and Stavropoulos joined Strikelight.

This era marked the band's transition into an international force, spearheaded by a powerhouse line-up:

* George Stavropoulos: Vocals
* George Chararis: Guitars
* Nikos Papakostas: Guitars
* Thodoris Vogiatzis: Bass
* Bill Xirokostas: Drums

Strikelight became a relentless live machine, playing all over Greece from major clubs to regional underground shows. This momentum carried them to prestigious European stages:

* Keep It True V (2005) in Germany: They performed at the legendary festival's warm-up show, cementing their reputation among European "True Metal" fans.

* Heavy Metal Maniacs (Ragnarök) in Holland: Proving the Greek scene could dominate on the highest level of the European underground.

* The 2004 Debut: Chararis was a core member for their seminal self-titled debut album on Eat Metal Records, for which Alexander Szczygiel designed the band's distinctive logo.

Artistic Legacy and Personal Loss

A cornerstone of Chararis’s journey was his deep bond with Alexander Szczygiel.

Alexander was more than just a collaborator; he was a close friend and the visual architect of Chararis’s musical world, designing most of the covers and logos for his projects, including Angel Drop, Strikelight and Spirits Engaged.

His passing in 2017 was a devastating personal loss, marking the end of a profound creative brotherhood that defined the visual soul of his music for decades.

A New Chapter: The UK and Royal Roar

For the past nine years, Chararis has been living in the United Kingdom with his family. This relocation was a pivotal turning point, providing the fresh perspective and stability necessary to launch his most ambitious initiative yet: Royal Roar.

In this project, Chararis has taken total creative control, serving as the multi-instrumentalist who plays every instrument except for the drums.

While he builds the musical foundation, the project is elevated by the participation of several significant vocalists from across the metal scene, including:

* John Britsas (Crimson Fire)
* Theodoris Martinis (Nightkill)
* Sakis Axiotis

Royal Roar is less a traditional band and more a creative vehicle: a platform where music, identity, and collaboration converge under a unified direction. Chararis acts as the operational core, using his background as a business owner and marketing strategist to shape ideas and assemble contributors with professional ex*****on.

The Man Behind Royal Roar
Georgios Chararis represents the architect of grassroots culture: a self-made businessman, shaped by Piraeus and rooted in Messinia, who uses his professional acumen to keep the music alive from his new home in the UK.

We are thrilled to announce a monumental live event at the iconic Kyttaro Live Club on Saturday, April 18, 2026.

No need to say anything about the huge British Rock legends FM band !

This isn't a trip down memory lane; it’s a full-throttle celebration of the music that defines us, delivered louder and heavier than ever before.

Also our brotherhood of the Greek scene is at the heart of this event, and we are beyond proud to have our brothers, the mighty Crimson Fire, charging the stage as our special support guests.
This connection goes deep: their powerhouse frontman, John Britsas , is the voice behind the soaring vocals on our Royal Roar project anthem, "I Play It Loud."

Having John and the rest of the Crimson Fire crew—true veterans of the scene—kicking off the night makes this anniversary complete.
This is a family affair for the lifers, the metalheads, and everyone who lives for the stage.

We are thrilled to feature the incredible John Britsas from the mighty Crimson Fire on vocals!
John brings that signature power and classic metal grit that takes "I Play It Loud" to the next level.

Also a massive shout-out to Yiannis Manolopoulos from the band Thelemite. The vocals were recorded and mixed at his studio, and we couldn’t have done it without his expert touch and unwavering support throughout the process.

This isn't just a song; it's a celebration of leather, studs, and high-voltage energy. It was made to be heard one way and one way only... LOUD!
