SPQR stands for Senatus Populusque Romanus, meaning “The Senate and People of Rome.” It was a symbol of the Roman state and represented the authority of Rome and its people. The letters SPQR appeared throughout the Roman world on buildings, coins, monuments, inscriptions and military standards, often alongside the famous Roman eagle, which symbolised Roman power and military strength. The symbol was so important to Roman identity that SPQR is still associated with the city of Rome today.
